P1 Tyre life
#1
Just curious, but do any P1 owners wish to comment on this (or others in the know for that matter).
I met someone today who claims he went through 3 full sets of tyres on his P1 in the first 7K miles.
Now baring in mind the first 1000 or so would be running in (which he said he did), I was a bit sceptical, especially when he underlined the fact this was ALL road driving and NO track days.
I drive my STI4 pretty hard on the twisties when in 'fun mode' (as my passengers will confirm) and I usually get about 8-15K miles per set out of my S02s or PZeros (depends if I have any long distance work between the fun).
Without deliberately dumping the clutch with the intention of blowing away the rubber is it likely he would managed this or was he talking bull****.
BTW: I asked him if he meant they wore out at the edges (i.e I thought his geometry was out), but he assured me not.
Mind you at the same time he claimed he'd been clocked by 'his mate' in a police helicopter doing 180mph, and he has a special gearbox and all sorts of mods he couldn't tell me about, but still warrantied by Subaru etc etc, so I think he was talking crap.
As my car has had many mods and on the last dyno run was doing 348BHP and has only been run up to about 160 on the clock before running out of gears, I thought it a little unlikely a P1 would even show 180 on the clock.
I've not owned a P1 so couldn't really challenge any of his comments, but found them a bit amusing.
What's the general concensus chaps ?
Thanks in advance.

I've just replaced mine for the first time at 15k service - 2mm on back, 4mm on front. Interesting that the backs wore more quickly. They have not been swapped (front to back) in their lifespan. Would have expected the fronts to wear more quickly.

This is entirely possible. A friend of mine uses a set of tyres in about 2500miles. This is on a slightly modded Turbo. Lets just say he drives quite fast. He does play quite often on a private "track" though.

If you overlook the faulty set that was put for 3k, my 3rd set went on at 23k.
I had some geometry issues on the first set, which Listers paid to correct after IM completely failed to deal with the matter. The tolerances IM issue are a joke, so I pays to get everything set to the middle of the tolerances.
I did think this would improve the 10k I got out of my first set but although it improved the handling, it has had no effect on tyre wear which, incidentally, has been very even.
I have just remembered a moron who got 3k out of set of fronts on his 98, before driving so badly he killed someone, but unless he's managed to aquire a P1, I would suggest bollox would have to be the answer to 3rd set at 7k.

Utter borrox. I play quite hard in mine and don't use it for commuting etc so all miles are "enthusiastic", my first set was fine at 9.5k when I swapped them for S02's. I then used the original Pzeros on 4 track days after that before I finally threw them away>
A"mate with a police helicopter" yeah right.
Clock on P1 only goes to 160mph, gears are longer than some Sti's but at Bruntingthorpe flat out on the 2 mile runway (won't pull to the redline in 5th) it will indicate roughly where 180 mph should be, but that is indication only and doesn't bear any resemblance to the true mph which is more like 167mph. Some people on here have proved that with GPS etc.
