Default winter tyres or not?

Just wondering what you guys think about changing tyres? I mean right now i've got some decent all wheather Bridgetsoness. Do really think its going to make a big difference in getting a set of winter tyres? I mean does it really snow that much in England to justify the change? Ok even if it does, its only usualy for a few days.....Besides this being my first ever AWD car, I presume even having bold summer tyres its going to feel brillaaint incomparison to my old vectra.

P.S Ofcourse if you arent feeling the credit crunch then fair enough, but if money's kinda tight would you really bother?

I've had my 03 WRX from new and this year i have bought Nokian WR G2 tyres. Am waiting for delivery at moment. Even if there is no snow, the tyre compound is very good for cold weather anyway.

Depends where you live and your type of driving.
Really impressed with the wet weather grip esp in monsoon conditions and deep puddles which you get alot off here in Scotland on the country roads esp at high speeds.
On snow they are one of those things that once you have treid them once you will not go back!
Really impressed with the extra grip.

I have just bought some this morning. Have Toyo T1R's on a set and now Dunlop Winter Sport 3D's on my spare set of wheels. Bought them from Online performance tyres in Alfreton and paid £235 for all 4, Fitted with 6.5mm of tread.
Absolute Bargain

I have only ever had the summer Bridgestones on and have never had problems going up hill but going down is a completely different matter. However to be shown up by a Vectra

205s x 50 would be better (I think they fit, someone correct me if Im wrong), then 215s and then 225s simply because the amount of pressure per square inch would be greater and bite into the snow more.

I have found the AWD brilliant for going up hill and to a lesser extent cornering compared to other cars but when you go down hill or braking you have no wheel drive and are no better off than any other car. This is when winter tyres far out way having an AWD system in my opinion. Being able to stop safely is more important than getting up a hill.
