Default big brakes

can anyone tell me the minimum wheel size i'd need for a 356mm disc/ 8 pot caliper setup? would anything else need changing, ie rear brakes. i've got standard 04 wrx brakes at the moment,
thanks for any advice lads.

My money would be on 18s - but you need to check the profile of the calipers against the profile of the back of the spokes.

thats a shame as i wanted to stick with the stock 17's, so i suppose my next question is what is the best way to go to upgrade my brakes from stock, as they're now crap. they are 294 grooved disc with mintex m1144 pads, the car is running around 320hp but maybe going upto the 400 mark so need to take that into account.
thanks for the advice

Get a 2nd hand set of STi Brembo calipers all round and the 330mm rotors that go with them. Add a set of Performance Friction PF-Z 11 pads and the job is done. At your power level they should be more than plenty man enough for the job and fit nicely under your std 17" rims.

Std WRX rims won't clear STi Brembos - you'll need either spacers or STi alloys.

Quite right, the std WRX Rims are 7J and the STi's are 7.5J with a slightly wider offset. No you're right the front calipers wouldn't clear the WRX wheel spokes although the rears will be fine.

Good excuse for some new wheels then

Or get some 330mm APs or K-sports. Ian at Godspeed does a nice range of APs with his own discs

Keep the original wheels for now

i've got grooved godspeed disc's at the moment which have heat cracked (they're 18months old). would heat be less of a problem on a larger disc or would i encounter the same problems? meaning is it the disc or the size thats the problem.

I had the Godspeed 330mm AP kit behind my std 17s before switching to the prodrive 18s

Yep Godspeed 335mm conversion for me, keep the car looking standard with the original wheels but stops very nicely.
