Default Rear disc stuck on - please help

Hi guys

I've changed three out of 4 of my discs, but the last rear disc just won't come off!

I read a couple of threads on here before I started.

I have slackened off the hand brake cable as far as possible (halfway was enough for the first one).

I've not had much luck with the star shaped bold that is supposed to wind the shoes back, perhaps I need to persevere here, but there really is very little access.

I have tried using the m8 bolts, but I have knackered the thread on the discs so that isn't an option anymore.

Hoping not to destroy the handbrake mechanism, but is there anything left to try accept brute force and ignorance?

This is my first try at this sort of job, whilst it has been time consuming I have been quite pleased with the results, but now it has beaten me. I've spent as much time on this one corner as the other three put together!

Hoping you have some helpful suggestions!

Cheers

Adam

You can try releasing the handbrake cable at the lever end: remove the centre console by liftting the lid of the centre oddment box, undoing the two screws under covers there, then lifting it out and unclippping the front, to reveal the handbrake mech. DO mark where it's at BEFORE loosening

You could also try removing the lip on the disc with a screwdriver/scraper.

HOW ON EARTH did you knacker the threads in the discs

If you aren't going to reuse the discs, you may have to use force to remove them, but be warned: YOU WILL damage parts of the handbrake mech so doing, and they will need new parts

Yup as above, big hammer (and saftey specs obviously ), as your replacing discs anyway the hammer marks wont matter, just double check you've slackened everything off first.

Thanks guys this is very helpful stuff.

Alcazar - was doing handbrake cable from inside. I kept winding the m8 bolts in and out not wanting to force the shoes out with the disc.

Bob - I lost my hammer (I need to tidy away properly after I use tools!) found it now though!

his-n-her - I read that thread and was using that diagram to help - so I was winding the nut the wrong way (that couldn't have helped!)

DamEscort - now I've found my hammer that disc is gonna get a serious thrashing!!

Thanks again guys - hope it works!

you need to slacken the actual mechanism inside the drum of the discs, slackening the cable itself will generally achieve very little.............

Thanks again for help.

When adjusting the correct way it came off easy.

The pin holding one of the shoes in had come loose and I took the bottom spring holding the shoes together off to make it easier to put the pin back in.

When I took the spring off the adjuster dropped off so I'm now not sure which way I put it back and so I don't know which direction to turn to adjust on and off. Might not be a great issue.

But, now all is back together I took her out and there is a grinding/rubbing noise coming from the back brakes. I don't know if it is the new pads and discs (seems unlikely) or the handbrake.

It is making the noise on each side and seems to do it more on either side when i swerve one way or the other (slow moving down a quiet cul de sac).

Any ideas? Is it normal (again seems unlikely). I really wanted to take the car to work tomorrow to make a start on bedding in the pads. Not sure that driving it while it is making this noise is sensible!

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Adam

That's wrong, assuming you reassmbled everything correctly do the following;

Jack the car on the diff to get the back end in the air, and provide additional support for safety
Slack of the handbrake adjuster nut in the cabin
Moving a wheel forward by hand, wind the wheel brake adjuster upward till the wheel locks
Wind adjuster back 3 teeth
Repeat for the opposite wheel
Pull the hand brake lever up 3 clicks
Tighten the handbrake adjuster in the cabin till, both rear wheels start to bind
Check that the wheels lock when the handbrake pulled on 4 or 5 clicks
Check that the wheels are free to rotate when the handbrake is off

That should do it, if it don't then it is a strip down to check that the drum brake components are correctly assembled

The noise is on both sides and I didn't have any problem with the drivers side, so I think everything went back together properly.

I will follow your instructions, but not until the weekend :-( the weather better not turn crappy.

Thanks again for your help.

I have a tip for turning the adjusters. I used the round head of a house door key. It was better than any screwdriver or anything else I had to try!

Good tip

I use a screwdriver with the last inch bent about 30 degrees.

a common thing to happen when fitting new rear discs , is you can bend the backplates by accident while trying to get the old discs off , if you take the discs off again , look for a shiiney part of the backplate where the rust or paint has come off , and bend it back again
That should stop the noise

Oh yeah. I do remember bending those a bit!!

I'll get my lazy butt outside and sort that out now. It will be so much easier than fiddling with adjusting stuff again!
