Which tyres? Choice of four.
Hi all, just want to hear some opinions on tyres. I'm not too concerned how they will perform in the dry coz I reckon they'll all be pretty good, but its the wet that I'm after the info for.
Tyres are;
1- Pirelli P Zero Nero
2- Pirelli P Zero Rosso
3- Avon ZZ3
4- Toyo T1R
All tryes would be 225/40 18, not that is really matters.
Just want to know how good each one would be in the wet and if you could put them in best to worst order.
Any other comments appreciated.
Thanks

hi mate.
I had some Avon zz3's on my Clio 182 and they were a pile of crap. Very unpredictable in dry and dare not do anything in the wet. I have just put some toyo t1r's on the subaru this weekend and they are awesome in the dry and have yet to try them in the wet but knowing out weather it won't be long.
Before the toyos I had firestone and they were ok - but t1r's are a lot better.
A lot of other people rate the vreidstein sessantas (sp) but have to say I ain't ever tried them.
Hope that helps.......

T1R's and Goodyear F1 Assemetrics are both good in wet ! I havent tried the vreidstein sessantas but these are good in the wet ive been told ! most of the tyres are reasonable in the dry but the best ive used in the dry are the Toyo 888, Awsome ! Great on track and road but they are noisey on road and tramline but ultimate Grip !

From your list I'd say the Avons and the Toyos but you really should consider the Vredestien Sessanta's. Maybe a bit dearer than the other two, but probably cheaper than the Pirelli's
I've gone from ZZ3's which were quite good, to Sessanta's which I've yet to scrub-in but feel good so far and actually seem more comfortable.

I have Toyo T1R's now after years with Michelin Primacy's on my classic. They are much better and are amazing in the wet. They don't seem to be wearing too quickly either.

Thanks, some pretty helpful answers there.
I had T1R's on a while ago and where ok in the dry. They were quite predictable and good to slide, but I never thought much of them in the wet. They do wear well though. I've had the back ones on now for nearly 3 years and done 23000 miles. Front just now are the ZZ3's. I think the grip is pretty good and slightly better in the wet I think. The side wall is softer on the avons than the toyos, you can feel the flex more. Saying that, I have an ALK fitted now, so haven't experienced toyos with this.
I'm quite tempted by the Vredestiens though. Will need to get a price on them. I got a good price for 4 pirelli's. £550 fitted which isn't too bad.
Wheel size is changing too though so thats probably gona make a difference as well.

I'd widen your choice, there are better tyres in the wet out there, Goodyear Eagle GSD3 or the newer Assimetrics as a starter. ZZ3 are ok if you put longevity before grip wet or dry. I had the P Zero Rosso before GSD3 on my first Impreza. Absolute transformation in wet grip.

Hi,
Had the Avons, hated them, they were horrid in the wet.
Then had Pirelli P-Zero Nero which I thought were fantastic until I had the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's.
The Sessantas are in a totally different league and it would take something serious to make me try anything else.
The general school of thought as I see it is a toss up between the Goodyear Assymetrics and the Vredesteins.

I haven't been able to get a local price for the Vredesteins yet as the places I've been to can't get them for whatever reason. Will go to some other dealers when I get a chance.
My choice of tyre is somewhat limited. I only want to spend about 500 to 550. I know I can't get the best tyres that will obviously be fantastic in the wet or dry, but have to find a happy medium somewhere between price, grip and lifespan.
I am open to using other brands but just don't know much about tyres.

CLook at Auto Zeitung 2009 tyre test
2009 Auto Zeitung Summer Test at tyre reviews - the online tyre guide
Also Kwikfit have 25% off a set of 4 Pirelli tyres till 29 August
Just quoted £500 all in for nitrogen filled P-Zero Rosso 225/40/18 92Y and £534 for the same but P-Zero MO's (mercedes only 225/40/ZR18 92Y) - higher load/weight rating which I believe have tougher side walls = better turn in (I think).

Just had a quick look at the link and looks pretty interesting. The difference between the Pirellis and the Toyos was quite a bit. But I see what everyone is saying about the Vredesteins, they look good. I'll have a proper read later. Cheers.

Would avoid the Avons at all costs,Vredesteins get very good reviews. One you havent mentioned is Michelin Pilot Sports, currently using the Pilot Sport 2's and they are very good in both wet and dry,225/40/18 around £150 a corner.

I have just gone through two sets of four Bridgestone Potenza's RE070 tyres in less than nine months. They are the quickest wearing tyre I have ever seen and almost killed me in the snow.
I have just ordered a new set of four Toyo T1R's which I got for a tad over £300 which I hope will be much better.

I'm not the greatesr advisor here however I bought some new tyres for my zx-9r recently from a company called Fast Tyres. The guy I spoke to their was called Chris and he advised me on best tyres and I found I saved about £60 on other sites and places I'd looked.
Next day delivery as well! they might be worth mailing or calling, the website is www.fastyres.co.uk

Have Avon ZZ3's on the focus and cannot rate them higher! I love them... been through loads of different tyres.
ZZ3's are quite cheap and great in all weather, mint in the dry and pretty good in the wet! Hard tyre so doesnt wear out as easy as the Toyo's i had on before.
I would say they are the same as the Toyo's but last a hell of a lot longer!
But i would proably get a set of Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's next

Thanks again guys, its looking like its a very personnal choice when picking tyres. There's some very good but differing answers above.
I would love to go online and buy them and save a fortune, but nowhere round where I stay seems interested in fitting them etc unless bought from them.
The reviews I've been reading about the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric's seem quite praising.

Hmm, bit of a drive for me
I have been trawling the net looking for any listings of tyre weights, and had bugger all luck. After getting a set of nice light alloys you don't want to be putting great big heavy tyres on them.
Anyone know where I can get this info for all the tyres mentioned above or know yourselves?

On the etyres website the T1Rs are £50 cheaper for the "reinforced" variant.
This seems v.odd. Can I go for the reinforced ones do you thinK?? They're £102 a piece balanced, taxed and fitted
