new discs and pads needed for newage
Hi,
I've recently had my 2004 WRX serviced by Subaru and they said the discs need replacing and the pads only have 7000 miles left on them so I asked can I just replace the discs and they said no they should both be replaced at the same time, is that true??
I've decided to get them myself and fit them rather than pay them £88ph for the privilege so what is the standard disc size for my car that I need to look for 276, 294 and also will Mintex MDB1416 M1155 pads fit my car.
Any advice appreciated.

Your current pads will be bedded in to your current discs. Putting your current pads onto new discs is a false economy. Complement the new discs with new pads for best results in braking and longevity

not strictly true.................
if your discs are in decent condition then there is no reason at all that you can't simply fit and bed new pads to suit.......the only time to be careful is when switching manufacturers and then they normally suggest "scouring" the discs to enable full bedding (only really an issue switching from one race pad type to another)

I seem to remember reading somewhere that, it's actually better to bed new disc's in with used pad's and vice verse. Although this may only be true of racing brakes..!?
It's more convenient to fit new pads at the same time as fitting new disc's, but then again how long would it take you to do 7000miles..? IMHO if they're oem pads then fit some uprated ones with some decent discs. You will notice a much needed improvement in braking ability..
Alyn (stockcar BTW..) will know everything you need to know and also be able to supply you with everything you need at a good price..

yes, most of the major brake manufacturers will recomend that you 'bed' old discs with new pads and vice-versa..........mainly because generally the 2x components nedd totally differing bedding needs!!
its a "quick-fit" type myth to sell more product to tell you that you need to change both at the same time............

Best off measuring the disc thickness and remaining pad material thickness yourself first.
There are a lot of dealers who "underestimate" remaining life in the hope of drumming up some extra business. Would be a total waste to change discs and pads before they are worn to limits.

Out of interest, have you ever felt the brakes inadequate..? If so, then you might as well fit a set of uprated pads at the same time (braided hoses too if you can stretch another £50 or so..), if not then just go with the new disc's..
Either way, I'd be ordering them from Alyn @ AS Performance (aka Stockcar) AS Performance - Rally Motorsport Specialists as he won't BS you into buying stuff you don't need and will be very reasonably priced..

If your looking to re-using the pads , get some emery cloth and rub the pad material onto them on a flat surface until the pads are flat , rub them a few times and have a look , you will see where the pads are out of shape as the emery cloth doesn't touch the face pad surface if they have worn to the shape of the worn discs , do it until the face of the pad has been touched by the emery cloth.
The discs are 24mm new , and should be replaced at 22mm thick , so you can check this yourself and change them when they need doing.
If you need discs , I can supply you grooved front discs with a 12 month guarantee against warping for £95 a pair plus £10 P&P for a next day delivery.
I can supply you the Mintex M1144/1155 pads for £95 a set.

I would love to know how they calculated that you have 7000 miles left in the discs, not 6000 or 8000 but 7.
TBH if a main dealer said to me that they had several thousand miles left in them, I would imagine that they have twice as many in reality. Might be worth having someone else check them before spending lots of ££££

My local dealer tried to get me to replace discs and pads all round, when i looked myself they still had over 1mm of disc material left and the pads were less than half worn. The best thing to do is take the wheels off one side and measure the brakes yourself.
