Default Brakes squeal only when going backwards?

Hey,

Got a weird problem on my 04 WRX. The brakes seems to squeal (sp?) but only when pressing them going backwards. Say reversing into a space, they squeal. But normal driving, going forwards, no noise at all..

Any possible symptoms to check out? Recently had new discs and pads up front, and new pads at the back, but it did it before these were done too

Cheers

Mine do the same and have done for friggin ages.
It usually is the handbrake and not the rear brakes

O right common problem then It's not my handbrake as I've been pulling it when reversing sometimes to stop the squealing.

Well I am just going by my experience and a few other mates
Thought it was my rear brakes but the handbrake shoes needed adjusting. Still cant get rid of the squeal today which is slightly embarrassing when I am reversing into car spaces

One trick is to reverse really quickly and then stamp on the brakes, you should have no squeal.

It will probably be the shims or similar.
Its one of those things that will bug you for ages

I don't know if this is the case with scoobs but a lot of high performance brakes have a slight toe-in affect, which is to stop vibration (squeaks) during light application. Obviously the toe in is for forward motion, so will have the opposite affect when going backwards; more squeak.

haha, seems like everyone had this.

just a quick question - i get this, but i would call it more of a droning noise than a squeal. Also, i only get it reversing, but its when i'm not using the brakes. pressing the brakes doesn't stop it. is this the same as you guys, or have i got a different issue?

Interesting Steve, I seem to be having something similar to you on my 02 WRX, where it makes kind of a droning/whining noise from the rear of the car when first moving from cold - mainly when reversing slowly, but sometimes when moving off forward too. At first I wasn't sure what it is (I've only had the car a few weeks), but maybe its this as well. Hopefully it isn't something else and I have so far thought little of it as it stops as soon as you start to move properly.

Andy
