Been around to Godspeed this morning and have seen the new kit that fits the Newage 2 pots and STi brembo's on the rear of a classic .

The Subaru 2 pots are very easy to fit as the 290mm discs have the same size handbrake as the classic 266mm discs , but the STi's have been a problem up until now as the handbrake is larger at 190mm compared to the bugeye's and classics 170mm drum.

I have seen various sites trying out inserts ect to make the drum smaller , some work and some dont , the main problem is fixing it in properly so on a hill the insert doesnt slip in the drum making it useless , seen others fitting grub screws and bolts ect , but that may make the ballance way out then , and with all that comes a load of work to do , also meaning expence.

Godspeeds answer to this problem , he's had thicker shoe's made to fill up the 190mm drum , so fricking easy its scarey

There is no modification to fit them , fairly cheap to get , so you had better start buying all those cheap rear brembo's kits flying around that no one thinks will fit.

Will this kit allow you to fit the 2-pots with the 316mm STI disc or will it just allow you to fit the 2-pots with the 290mm disc or the Brembo's with the 316mm disc?

Still need to buy or fabricate a bracket to mount the caliper though.
Nice idea re: shoes, but what happens when you or the next owner need to replace them ?? it doesn't sound like they are off-shelf.

you dont need to source a bracket , as that what the fitting kit is , its a bracket kit that enables either the 290mm discs and calipers from the bugeye model to fit the classic , or to fit the brembo discs and calipers from the sti to a classic. If you are fitting the sti brembo's you need the thicker shoes to go with them

Scott , if you are fitting parts from one model to another there is always going to be a comprimise on some parts , yes you can only source the shoes from Godspeed ay the moment , someones bound to copy , but I would say its a much simpler way than fitting inserts into discs, with inserts , once the disc is worn and thrown away , the insert goes with them , so new discs means new inserts again = more expence , the handbrake shoes will last longer than the rear discs will , the discs are being used every time you use the brakes , and because you are moving when they are being used they will wear down , as the handbrake isn't used while you are moving they dont wear , so handbrake shoes are going to last much longer than modified discs.

Scott, this is a fairly common practice for historic motorsport to have brake shoes re-lined so no doubt Godspeed aren't doing this themselves, therefore other people will always be able to supply a similiar service...............

Its common practice that Lorries also have their shoes re-lined , so it can be done in just about every town ,

But there wont be many people out there that have had to change they're handbrake shoes , they just dont wear so will last ages

At the end of the day it will come down to the cost of the kit.
What's the cost of the kit inc brackets, fixings and suitable shoes for 190mm drums.

I know Godspeed stuff is thought to be good. But when you price up the 4-pot upgrade kit, I think most of the cost is in the bespoke brackets.

Don't you have to change the wheels also if fitting newage brembos?

Only ask because I'd like to get front and rear gold brembos but having to replace the wheels as well puts me off.

Used Ian in the past and very happy to deal with.

As far as I can see the rears wont be a problem fitting them under most 17" wheels , its the fronts that is a problem as the calipers are so big , and the discs dont have much offset on them , after market front kits have more offset on the bells to take the discs and calipers in away from the spokes , this is the problem with the STi Brembo fronts

The STi rears will be a good / cheap upgrade for people who have already fitted a large front kit , be it the STi brembo's / AP kits /Godspeed 335mm kit using Subaru calipers ect

Thinking about this last night.......I'd be interested to see how this works.

In theory it sounds great i.e re-line the shoes with 10mm or extra material (each) to take up the slack between a 170mm drum and a 190mm drum.

BUT... on the backplate for a 170mm drum, behind where the shoes mount there is a raised/pressed circular lip that has, I would guess a 180mm diameter approx. So I'm interested to see how the re-lined shoes fit.

This image shows the pressed steel edge, which could fowl/prevent the shoes working when enlarged.

Just looked at a rear hub with standard shoes on , and the sides of the shoes are about 2mm away from that lip , so it wouldn't matter how thick the material is it isn't going to touch , the same way that if you fit an insert into the discs , this will also clear

Cool, as said it was just a thought....it was on my mind when I was on my way back from a Prodrive tour. So had been a bit sad and was looking at all sorts of different brake installations.

iv got a classic with discs all round can i get a set of sti discs with the brembo calipers to put straight on??
if not any1 know a good set of disc at a resonable price.
and i need a set of front calipers my passenger side is sticking, any1 else ad this problem

Using the GodSpeed Kit, yes, but beware the front calipers are rather large so you may have wheel clearance issues depending on size/style.
