Classics should be either 205/45/17 or 215/40/17's

215/40/17 for classic (nearest 17 conversion to the standard 16)
215/45/17 is standard for new age

I had 205/45/17's on & just replaced them with 215/45's it should have had 215/40's on but I wanted a bit of profile so the ride was comfy.

The only problem I ran into was that the rear tyre's fouled on the arch rubber when fully laden & driven hard, so I remied this buy removing the rubber.

The car drives really well now on the larger tyres and makes the rough roads near me still quite comfy.

So I think theres no harm in fitting a slightly larger profile.

i think i am going to go for the 215/45/17's. there are a lot of pot holes where i live. i use the lanes a lot and my rims have suffered. ive replaced 2 wheels in less than 3 years because of bucking from holes. the extra profile makes sence to me

Sara, it might be worth posting up what wheels and offset you have aswell, as this also makes a difference as to wether they will rub or not, it's a lot of money to spend if they turn out to be the wrong choice......
