Your best bet is to go for 17's, they go straight on without any problems with clearance, and dont affect the handling characteristics of the car.
18's will go on, but it depends how much the car has been lowered as to whether they will catch, but they do make the handling not so good,just remember to get the right offset whatever size you choose.

Subaru offsets are usually ET53/55 most aftermarket wheels are about ET45/48 and PCD 5x100
Recommended tyre sizes are 205/45/17 or the more common 215/40/17 and 215/35/18 occasionally 225/35/18.
