Life expectancy of Bridgestone Potenza RE10's
#1
Just wondering what sort of mileage you have had out of these tyres. I have so far managed 15,000 miles on these tyres and the fronts are getting to the stage of being "interesting" in the wet (Around 3mm left) so I am beginning to think about what to replace them with. These tyres have never been rotated so the rears are in much better condition than the fronts but I assume it will be better to replace all 4 at once.
Now I know the RE10's get regularly slated on this messageboard so you can guess how I drive when I say I think they are fine! I want to replace the tyres with something that is good but not so soft that I have to replace them every 8,000 miles.
So which tyres do you think would best suit my needs (Of basically driving like a wuss)??

I asked the dealer when I bought my car, he said 5K to 15K miles depending on how driven, so 15K is pretty good. I swopped mine around a 6K as recommended, but still changed them at 10K.
Unfortunetly, I changed them for another set of RE010's (my excuse is I got them cheap with new wheels from a dealer...).
IMHO RE010's are a very hard compound - they feel truly awful for the first few miles on a cold morning, and after a 100 miles on the motorway the ride quality seems to improve as the tyres really hot.
Ah... tyre warmers then...

No expert and have SO2's myself but as the reputation for the 010's is so bad you might look around at Good Year F1s?? There are lots more "performance" tyres than just Toyos and Bridgestones and probably at more reasonable prices (maybe even cheaper than 010's).
One thing I would say, my friends MY00 used to Tram line horribly on the standard 010's and when I drove his car I found it quite un-nerving compared to my MY95 .

I removed the RE010,s after 11,000 miles as Iwas upgrading to 17" wheels. The Bridgestones have approx 3mm tread left ie not much life left. I have gone for Toyo T1,s. One thing I have noticed is they do not "Tram line" like the RE010,s did.

My RE010's were all done at 12K and that was with very little hard use, for the last 3K they were tram lining very badly.
I have now changed to Goodyear F1's and the tram lining has completely gone, it's a bit early to comment on the performance.
I was also pleasently surprised that the ride quality is no worse at all, going from 16's to 17's.

Had 010's and got around 15K by 'rotating' fronts and backs. Despite the slating here I've never found any traction issues with them wet or dry. Totally predictable.
Mind you I've not driven the scoob on anything else yet and never been on track. Tramlining however is seriously pants on some of the tracks they call roads round my way. Even slight ruts on motorways trap them.
Have a set of S02's in the garage waiting to go on.

My original RE010's lasted about 8500 miles and were down to the wear indicators all round by then. I then got a nearly new set with wheels which lasted about 7000. Both sets tramlined horribly for the last few thousand miles of their life. I've just bought some Toyo T1's and it is like having a new car!

I've had three sets of RE010s and only got around 6000 miles out of each set
I agree with Jerry and think the RE010s are actually quite good (flame suit on!). Having said that, I'm now on 17" SO2 which are superb in the dry and unbelievably good in the wet
Cheers,
Ian.

Like many here I went from OEM 16" RE10s to Eagle F1s on my MY00 at around 13K. I've found the ride a bit "crashier" since the switch, but they are wearing much better and the tramlining has completely disappeared. Good value, but I might try S02s / S03s next, if only because I've found the F1s aren't as sharp turning in as the RE10s - of course that might just be dodgy tyre pressures.

My original RE010's were down to about 3mm after 9000 miles and were never really good in the wet as well as tramlining badly.
So after following previous threads I fitted SO2 PP's which transformed the handling completely. They have done about 7000 miles now and still have stacks of life left in them.

Had a quick look at the front tyres again at lunchtime and apart from the outside shoulder of the passenger side tyre looking a bit worn they are actually not too bad!! I think they have around 2mm before the wear indicators so I think I could probably get a good few thousand miles out of them yet although with the bad weather comming up I think I will replace them in the next month or so.
Guess I must be a total girl if they still have this much tread after 15,000 miles?? You don't evan want to know how much of the brake pads are left!!
I would guess the backs have nearly 5mm of tread left so could I get away with just getting another 2 RE10's for the front of is there some terrible reason why I shouldn't do this?? How much tread do these tyres have when brand new
Had a quick look at www.merityre.co.uk as they have a branch 300 yards away from my house and they want £110 each for Goodyear F1s and £95 each for Bridgestone RE10's. Add another £35 for fitting and that works out as £475 a set for the F1s and £410 for the RE10's. I know it is only £65 more but I would rather get the RE10's again if the F1's are going to be too soft and not last.

Pay no more than 75 pounds a corner for F1s, including fitting and valve. Micheldever and Bracknell Tyre and Battery, are your best bet, or use their price to get your local supplier to reduce their's.
Just fitted a set of S02's to my MY00, after 17K on 010's, amazing diffference, reduced tyre noise, better ride and fantastic grip in wet and dry conditions. Paid 99 pounds all in.

I still wear them after 6000 and they appear to be at their half life (any Enthusiast?!). Instead of Toyos and good year i would suggest to consider Michelin Pilot sport as they offer great grip and relatively long life. Otherwise the pzero (yellow not rosso)for dry conditions. Their only problem is that the tread quality drops suddenly at 70 % of its usage.

RE 010 is fine on a dry road, but scary in the wet, terminal understeer at rather low speeds.
Had S-02's on a Lancia Dedra Turbo a couple of years ago and wet grip was higher despite the chassis being less capable than Subaru.
Will be moving to S-03's when standard fit RE010 wears out.

Joey,
Have an ask around your local dealers for Toyo T1S's. I've got these in 215/40 17" versions on my RB5WR and they are excellent IMHO
I paid £438 all in for the 4 tyres, including balancing and alignment from Elite in Rainham Essex. If you are running 16" tyres they will be cheaper and they will last for considerably more than 8000 miles if you are driving like Miss Daisy.

After a little incident on Saturday where I had to slam on the brakes to avoid a dozy woman who pulled across the front of the car it got me thinking that if it had been wet I am not sure if I could have avoided her so have decided to order a new set of tyres today.
Finally got the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2's for £78.50 each plus VAT which comes to a grand total of £368.95. Just Tyres were REALLY trying it on with a quote of £135 each which then fell to £115 each. Once I said it was too expensive the guy just said he couldn't help me and virtually hung up. Also got another guy who first tried to sell me pirellis and then the Avons (Which I have heard are suicidal). Funny how they would rather sell what they have in stock rather than ordering them for you!!

No one on this board likes RE730s? Or, can you fellows not get them on your side of the pond? I've got a set on my Impreza wagon and I love 'em. Great in the dry, great in the wet! Decent price, to boot!
