Hi folks

I run a UK MY00 with 17" Superleggaras on it. The standard front disks are just about worn out, as are the replacement pads, so I am wondering whether to replace them with more standard kit from Subaru or to upgrade to something with a bit more woomph. Hence I'll ask you for your advice! Here's my story...

My experience with the standard brakes (they're 4 pots, like an STi apparently) was that the stopping power was good, but during hard runs they did eventually get too hot and start to fade (not pleasant). I haven't had too many experiences where I've not been able to scrub off enough speed in time. The wear hasn't been great (done 23k miles and just finishing off set of pads number 2).

So firstly, how much would it cost to get standard disks and pads and have them fitted by a dealer?

Secondly, would I benefit from bigger brakes given that I don't really go out on the track, but might once or twice per year.

Thirdly, is it a false economy to go for something like a 500 quid upgrade instead of something monstrous like the 1250+ brembo and AP kits?

Godspeed's 325mm upgrade kit seems good value at £650. Any thoughts on that?

Would braided hoses make sense for my situation or are they an unnecessary expense?

Tricky one, and please feel free to email me off list, but has anyone ever had a really crappy experience with a brake upgrade?

Finally, I'm about as mechanically useful as, well, something not very useful, so how much should I be paying to get this stuff fitted?

Thanks in advance as this appears to be a very helpful forum!

Thumbs up

R,

I opted for the Godspeed upgrade and it has certainly sorted the fade that you mention when pushing on enthusiastically. They look the biz but you will need spacers under the Superleggerras (as I have). I didnt go the braided hoses route but may do sometime in the future but that not a huge expense. However Ron did get the braided hoses and he is very pleased. The Godspeed option is excellent value for money imho (usual health warnings apply) so it's up to you. There are pics and views if you do a search say over the last 4 months.

Hope this helps.

Robman, this is what I'd do based on what I know and what you've said.

If you're going to do more track days, especially at heavy circuits for brakes (Donington, Knockhill, Oulton) then go straight for the real deal (Alcon/APR/Brembo etc). I've wasted loads of time, money and track time wrecking cheaper alternatives.

If you were on 16in wheels, I'd look at the Prodrive upgraded discs and pads, or ditto Pagids from ScoobySport, but you're on 17s and that will give you a useful increase in brake power

Godspeed are getting more good reports on here and the prices are very attractive for a big disc with alloy bell (important) using your 4-pot calipers and upgraded pads. Ferodo DS2000 pads are ideal for your application (but pricey, and only from Prodrive) although there are others. Stick them in the back, too.

Fitting is a doddle, so 1 hour? £50-100 depending on local rates. Leave the back protection plate on - just bend it back to clear the bigger disc. If you want braided hoses, probably add the same again. Some people swear by them, but Prodrive don't bother. However, if you're going to do the job properly go for the hoses and a fresh fill up with 5.1 fluid. You'll need 1 litre.

It's a simple choice!
If you've got loads of money get AP calipers and decent discs like AP or Godspeeds.
If you don't want to spend a fortune, get Godspeeds 335mm kit. I did and was most impressed with them. I did Goodwood and gave 'em hell and they stood up with no problems what so ever. They most certainly stop the car a lot better than a disc/pad upgrade and I very much doubt you'll get fade or warping.
I've now sold the kit as I sold the car and have ordered a set of discs for my new Evo.

Robman , If you already have the four pot calipers and 17" wheels then the 335mm kit we make is the one to go for , I think everyone who has had them has had only good things to say , they work very well , as good as the AP 330 kit , we sell them aswell , If you have the same wheel as Jerome you may need spacers , his wheels had a offset of ET48 , I thought the offset was slightly less than this on thse subaru ?? we had to put a 2mm or 3mm spacer on to the clear the calipers , Hope this helps , Ian , www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk , ps , thanks for the good reports guys

Ian, FYI, Impreza off-set is 53mm up to MY00, although Prodrive insist 52mm is optimum. MY01 car is 55mm.
