Question

Looking at uprating the brakes (no surprise there then!!) on my rb5 wr. Thinking about ap 6 pots having done a search but i am slightly concerned that the standard suspension cannot handle that much stopping power and the back end gets light enough as it is. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated...

I've got a MY00 with standard suspension and have had AP 6 pots for about 3 1/2 months. So far I've only felt the rear end going light under Very heavy braking and it's never given me any scary moments. The times that I have noticed it, I would have been in trouble trying to brake from the point with the standard 4 pots. As long as you're aware that there will be weight transfer, it shouldn't be a reason to stop you upgrading.

I agree with M_D_B, have been running 6 pots for some time, and the only time I notice the rear going light is on track. Other than that they give great service.

Just to echo the other comments, I've had AP 6 pots on my MY97 since March with standard suspension and haven't had any problems at all.

Hi,

I found that my AP 4-pots caused excessive tranfer of weight when braking within their capabilities from high speeds. This can cause the back end to get very light, to the extent where it becomes unstable, and could potentially swap ends. I'm not sure if this is mainly due to weight transfer, aerodynamic effects at high speeds, or changes in geometry front and rear.

IMHO, you should consider upgrading the suspension at the same time to stiffen it and restore the stability. It will further increase your braking abilities too.

Not trying to be alarmist - just relating my experience.

I've never had a problem with a light rear end with my huge 335 x 32mm uprated brakes, just superior stopping power, even on track, and they do it more than once unlike the crap Subaru call brakes.

Buy them and enjoy.

Agree with Alex, but Prodrive will happily fit their big Alcon kit without suspension upgrade.

Must admit that I've had a couple of occasions on the track where the back end went very light, though it was braking hard from 120+mph using slicks and DS3000 pads!

Had I not been following the 'brake in a straight line' rule, I'm sure the car would have swapped ends!

I personally like walking the fine line between ultra late braking and risking a spin. When I'm in a good driving mood and get it just right its very rewarding.

Andy (AP 4 pots, standard suspension)
