Default Winter rims & tyres?

Just picked up a 2005 WRX- new pride & joy- always ran winter tyres (Vredstein) on spare rims with other performance cars. The WRX has std 17" rims- not much choice of M&S rated tyres- so I was thinking of picking up a set of 16" or 15" if they'll clear the calipers.

Has anyone any experience of what'll fit (do they have to be off the current range, could I get a set of steelies like my dad runs on his '00 Forester AWP ) ?

Anyone know of a better tyre than Vredstein for mud & snow?

Any advice gratefully recieved!

We live a little off the beaten track, but not that far north, so tyres tend to have to deal with mud/slush and big rocks in the road rather than packed snow.

Plenty of winter-oriented tyres in 205/50-17 if that doesn't put the speedo too far out, have a look on mytyres.co.uk and choose the 'winter' type.

Still probably better to get some cheap rims too 'cos of all that salt and the inevitable dings.

Bought some Toyo Snowprox 205/45/17 for my old classic, ran them on my newage no problems during winter.
They are available in the correct newage size of 215/45/17 as well.

Goodyear also produce a winter tyre in this size as well.

thanks for the replies- I'll see what I can find for a spare set of rims. I tend to get a bit carried away when the white stuff arrives....

Cheers,
Peter

Should have some Nokian WRs by Monday. Had a set of 16" and 17" rims spare, decided to get the 17s shod and sell the 16's which I'll get round to sometime. The 16s have more options for tyres and are cheaper, but, what the heck....Will let you know what the Nokians are like as soon as the weather gets back to 'normal' for the time of year - whatever that is! - as it's more like summer at the moment!
