Question WRX wheels, what size

I want to upgrade the wheels on my MY96 WRX. I am thinking of 17's although could stretch to 18's. What is the best width to go for, will it take an 8" wide rim. What are the best tyre sizes, I dont really want to go low profile on the 17's, maybe 45's. Any info gratefully received

Usually a 7x17" wheel with spokes designed for Subaru's and, IMHO, an ET of no lower then 45.
Tyres should be 205/45 but more commonly 215/40 on 17's

18" wheels should be shod in 215/35.
