Default 205/50/16 vs 215/35/18 - confused!

I have just got new 18" wheels with 215/35/18 tyres having had stock 16" with 205/50/16 tyres ... both with sets of t1-s.

The 205s look wider .. and the tape measure agrees with me ! I thought that 215 would be a bit wider so tell me what's the crack here then? Any advantage going to 18s will be lost by a reduction in road/rubber contact patches so outright grip for braking/cornering/acceleration will be reduced !!!!
