Had the same problem on 02 STI. Left front. Dealer claimed it's very unusual.

Just a word of caution.

I had the same noise on my UK00 after 82k. A mate and I thought wheel bearing so I asked my dealer to check. They did a very thorough job, full examination on the ramp, found nothing. So we went for a test drive, also inconclusive. They said nothing wrong.

The only clue I got was it can't be the CV joints as they make a rythmic clicking/drumming sound. The noise got worse, although nobody but me could really notice it. Since it couldn't be CV joints I thought, I had the bearing changed at the next service. About £300, and it made no bloody difference

The noise is getting louder now, and sure enough there's a rythmic knocking/drumming sound amongst the grinding noises so I reckon it must be CV joints after all. Taking it to dealer next week.

Good luck,

Richard.

Garage finally sorted it. It was not a wheel bearing, or a cv joint. So what was it then?

It was my Scoobysport headers drumming on the sub-frame as the engine moved on its mounts! As soon as the undertray came off, it was obvious to all but a lot of time and money wasted
