I don't think they've cracked but over the last week the brake pads have been making high pitched squealy sounds on the discs even when the brakes are not applied which gets louder on light braking and then disappears on heavy braking. There is no deterioration in performance, they brake very well with no juddering whatsoever. The discs do not look crack. MY00 PPP with OEM discs 10000mils, 9000 of those with Mintex 1155, the last 1000 with a PPP and I've been **<MUCH>** harder on the brakes recently. Are the discs likely to be warped? I tried putting on some more copper grease and cleaning things up a bit on the nearside front wheel and it's helped a bit, but it is so loud you can sometimes hear it at 70mph!

Is it time for new discs when I visit Falkland tomorrow?

John,

I don't claim to be a brake expert at all, my least most knowledgable area in fact, but my scoob has warped discs, and believe me, when they're warped, you know about it. There's no squealing whatsoever, just masses of juddering and grinding noise when braking hard from anything over 40mph. Steering wheel goes ape seriously and there's little actual braking.

So I don't reckon yours are warped in the classic sense of the term, but obviously something's wrong. Not sure how a cracked disc shows itself, if it's hairline then maybe you won't see it. Maybe it's just a pad/disc conflict, maybe it's worth trying some new pads and seeing if it makes any difference before you shell on new discs?

Ian at Godspeed is a pretty knowledgeable dude, I reckon send him a mail or something.

cheers,
Spence

Welcome to the world of mintex pads . I'm surprised it's taken this long (9000 miles) for them to squeal . I fitted a set of 1166's for a track day last week and they are squealing already . They're coming out again this weekend - the noise is driving me nuts . It's a case of 'They all do it sir' .

They are silent this morning - even from cold!!!! Very puzzled. I did give them a good thrash late last night. Maybe that helped.

John, you must have been dawdling about.

They can glaze over if you're gentle with them.... a good thrash usually de-glazes them though.

If not, just take them out and give them a bit of a roughing up of the friction area with some emery cloth.

I took them both out and cleaned/coppergreased them and all was fine - for a while and then it came back. Can even hear it at 70mph sometimes - a good thrash sorts it out - but it soon comes back again after pootling around. I am concerned that constant dragging will overheat the pads/discs/fluid/calipers - is this likely? Is this just a consequence of metallic type pads (1155) - Falkland suggested it can be as they get older - but there is still plenty of wear on them. Would grooved discs stop this carry on? It almost seems like there are metallic fragments that squeal and then they get fried off when you "use" them. I can't think the pistons are sticking as the problem goes away after a blast. Please any help.

Any ideas - they are still "dragging"?

No except mine do that too. I was quite worried about it a couple of months ago, but if it was a problem either the pads would be gone or the discs would be shot by now. I heard an Elise at an airfield day that sounded like it had pads dragging on the discs -- I thought "I bet they're Mintex".

For what it's worth, mine does it too

It's been playing on my mind for about 1000 miles now.

I am running OE pads and Discs, no track days and only 3 "Emergency" brake manouvres

The squeal normally manifests itself after a stint on a dual carriage way or motorway and can be momentarily got rid of by "Lightly" touching the brake pedal or by loading the suspension by accelerating or (Gently) steering left and right. Really gently mind and you'll hear it squeal, stop, squeal, stop.

Sometimes it occours when the road veers in a particular direction (Dual carriageway, motorway) where due to the speed, 50mph + you feel like the car isn't steering but the suspension is actually loaded up.

Less than 30mph and the problem is not evident. I have no bloody idea what it is.

So will grooved discs help? And if I'm changing discs many suggest changing pads as well, although some notable exceptions say this is not necessary. Lots of folk recommend EBC or Ferrodo, but is there anything as effective as 1155 for similar price - I don't think I'd like to pay £150 for a pair of flipping brake pads? Nobody seems to agree on what pads to use - some say 1155 some say not, some say EBC Green others say they are not up to even road levels of abuse. Others say Ferrodo DS2000, 3000 or 4000. Others say Prodrive switched to Ferrodo cos they're better than 1155, others because Prodrive couldn't get the deal they wanted with Ferodo!

They still squeek even when the brakes are not applied!

Sounds like a sticky caliper to me !

That's what I orig thought but the original pads do not do it so it must be the pads.
