Wheel offset
#1
Does anyone know what offset the wheels are on a MY98 Turbo.
Would 7"x17, 5x100 pcd, 50mm offset wheelsfit?
If not, is it OK to machine the wheel face to get the correct offset?
TIA,
Neil Robertson

My standard my98 wheels have 7*16jj 53 written on the inside of the spokes so I guess that makes the standard offset 53mm.I personally can't see 3mm making that much difference,I'm sure others can advise.
Potential problems include wheels fouling the calipers at the front and tyres rubbing on the arches at the rear depending on the tyre size.Again I'm sure others can be of more help.

Hi Neil
I have 215/40/17 with 48mm offset without problem even in full load.
The problem is when you lower the car, the wheels on the rear full the arches (it depends from the tyre's make).
Probably you'll have an adverse effect on handling as you can see at SIDC "4.2 Wheels" section.
I have no such problems with mine, I don't know why!

In theory, they should be fine. The only thing you need to check is that the spokes clear the calipers OK?
Machining the face to hub area of the wheel would increase the offset further so you could go up another 3mm (in theory) still. That would take the spokes closer to the caliper though.
(If that makes sense).
Mike.

Thanks for your replies, still a little confused, though.
Is offset measured from the hub face to the 'outside' rim of the wheel? If so, would you need to include a spacer to increase the offset?
If it is measured form the hub face to the inside rim of the wheel, then I guess the opposite is true !
Thanks,
Neil.
