So how do i push a brake piston back in when I'm changing my pads ?

On my bike i can use a big pair of mole grips (with clothes, etc to make sure i dont damage anything) coz the caliper is pretty small. But on the itr I cant work out what tool could possibly fit to push the piston in.

any ideas ?

On my lancia you had to twist them in and would not budge unless you did so.

alhough i dunno if this is the case with your particular calipers....

just a thought........

none of the above....

you cant get at the piston due to the caliper shape (hard to explain, but its a bit C shaped with the piston at the base).

I gave up and took it in to someone. Out comes the special tool bit like a chain breaker.

oh well, now i know. At least the rears have lasted 14K (i'm on my third set of fronts....)

They are not that hard to push in you can do it by hand with a pipe or large screw driver

I have always undone the caliper to bracket bolts and pulled the caliper against the disc (fixed on hub and with pads still in place).
Worked on all the cars I have ever had and does not cause damage to discs or pots.

i couldnt get the leverage required for any of the "manual" methods - no way could you do this with your fingers.

I'll wait till winter and make up my own "Haynes manual" style tools as per Dereks advice

You can buy brake piston retractor tools at any good accessory shop or , like me , make your own using a couple of pieces of flat plate and a M12 nut & bolt .

Jon,

I'm very confused , I've owned 2 scoobys and changed the pads quite a few times and never had a problem pushing the piston in. Are they standard ??
