TURBO7379

Are you talking about the front or rear calipers here?

Why do people say that scoobys are fitted with 2 or 4 pot calipers when they are not . The first impreza turbos were fitted with a single piston sliding caliper the same as 90% of all cars which has been upgraded now to a 2 piston caliper . This has been confirmed by 2 mates who both work in a scooby dealers , one the head mechanic and the other the service/parts manager .
One of the few standard road cars to come with true 4 pot calipers was the austin princess and they can be found retro fitted on many rally cars such as Mk2 escorts .
Is this the result of sales blurb or how has this misconception come about ?

I don't know what you mean, I've had my '4 pots' apart a few times and can clearly see 4 pistons inside there pressing on the pads.

Explain please ?

IMHO
having inspected my brakes on numerous occaisions i strongly believe that my MY99 Turbo has 'four pot' brakes on the front.
Four as in the number four and 'pot(s)' as in the number of pistons.

You say that the first ones where not fitted with two/four pots and that 90% where converted, what is your point?

I think that people say that their cars have two or four pot calipers 'cause they do!
Misconceptions ???

Do you mean the rear brakes?, am i missing the point??

Not sure what point you are trying to make here, please expand/enlighten me.

TURBO, Sorry to dispute this however:

I upgraded the Calipers on my MY98 three weeks ago and here is what I observed:

1. Each orignal (2 pot) caliper had 2 pistons next to each on the inside of the caliper, ie. both operating on one side of the disk, as you describe the caliper slides to allow the pistons to apply reactive force on the outside pad.

They look like this:

2. Each replacement (P1) caliper had 4 pistons (2 pairs) opposing each other, ie. 2 operating on each side of the disk (and hence 2 on each pad).

(Sorry no photo)

I have seen with my own eyes that each caliper has either 2pistons ( >= MY98 ) or 4pistons ( >= MY99 )

I think you've misunderstood me . I'm talking about each single front wheel . If you remove one front wheel on an early turbo with '2-pot' calipers and strip the caliper you will only find one moving piston pressing the pad on that side , the other pad being pressed by the sliding action of the caliper , properly called a single piston sliding caliper . 90% of all cars on the road use this system .
If you strip a single caliper on the later turbos with '4-pot' calipers you will find 2 pistons opposite each other , one for each brake pad , properly called a 2-pot caliper .
Maybe they are called 2/4 pots because that is the total number of pistons in the braking system . But even this isn't right as there is another piston on each back wheel so they should be 4/6 pots .
Are there any motorsport people such as John Felstead who can back me up on this or explain it a little better ?

early turbos had two pots upfront and single pot rears. then they changed to four pot fixed calipers front and still single pot rears and now the my01 has four pot fixed front and two pot fixed rears.
i think your head mechanic needs his head looked at!

Thanks for the info lads , it appears I've been mis-informed . I'll be seeing the aformentioned subaru 'experts' this weekend and I'll wear my steel toe-capped boots as I'll be doing some major **** kicking . Sorry for the confusion .
