It's time to replace the tyres on my 16" track day rims. What's the collective view on the economical way to run track day tyres- part worn or cheap new (Falken, even Roadhog!)?

Cheers

Lee.

Part worns are good, totally knackered are even better (within reason)! If you've got a spare set of wheels, you can get part worn 16in slicks for about £40 a corner. They'll probably last you a whole season of track days. Incredible grip.

Auto-Tecnica (01924 494 884) are doing 4 Champiro (or something) directional tyres for £120 (not inc fitting).

Supposed to be not too bad either... (for **** cheap tyres).

Not tried them myself.

Question

Hoppy,

Where is the best place to buy part worn 16 inch track slicks or asphalt rally slicks? I am thinking of running some for track days.

Sieze, you have to get them where you can. I don't know of any 'regular' supply. But when the season gets going, competition 'control' tyres are quite easy to get hold of. Control or parc ferme tyres, call them what you will, are designated tyres for a particular racing formula and participants must use a new set at every meeting (to prevent cheating). So there are lots of used sets about. And you wonder why motorsport is expensive!!!

These tyres are 'supplied' by the organisers and held in 'parc ferme' when they are not actually on the track. You can pick up a set of these tyres, which cost around £150 each, for £150 the lot. They might only have done a handful of laps!

Stef has been known to get hold of a few. Try Tyres Northampton 01604 588599. Call Phil Bennett on 07974 156646. Keep a close eye on the For Sale section. Post a Wanted ad. Check the small ads in the back of Motoring News.

As far as new tyres is concerned, Demon Tweaks is as good a place to start as any. I've found them very helpful, but I managed to find some part-worns before shelling out mega dosh for new.

PS 16in racing tyres are quite easy to find. 17in tyres are thin on the ground in Impreza-friendly sizes.

PPS Racing tyres are marked differently to road, like 210/620x17. 210 is width, 620 is diameter. Anything over 620 on a Scoob is dodgy (too tall).

I am trying to re-juvenate my supply of 16" slicks.
