I recently bought a MY00/X new with good old original fitment 16" Bridgestone RE010s. As everyone else here says, S02s are great tyres but I need help with a strange requirement (sad, some may say!). I do about 35k miles a year on the motorways and I can't hear myself think sometimes with the road noise! Has anyone got any good ideas on 16" tyres with good wet & dry grip, but quieter?! Not too worried about tyre life or cost. Goodyear F1s have been recommended - any thoughts? What about these Toyos?

Thumbs up

Just put Toyo's on mine. They are a lot quieter than my previous A520's.
Grip in wet is very good too.

I'm beginning to think tyre noise is a general Subaru trait (OE Bridgestones or not). Both the Imprezas I have owned have been fairly noisy and we've tried all manner of things with the wife's Legacy. However, they've all been 5dr/estate models - 4 is probably better? I've got a SS backbox so I don't care any more! The wife's got P6000s fitted which seem the quietest we've had, but they're not very sticky! The three layers of old carpet that keep the dogs off the boot floor appears to be the best solution so far.

I've had the OEM tyres, PZeros and Good year Eagle F1s. The F1s are by far the quietest and also grip well, especially in the wet.

Easy answer - fit the S02's - and a full Scoobysport system from the turbo back. From experience, having the above spec, you'll never hear the tyres again.....

Thanks for the ideas guys. It is a 5 door as Moss suggests, so that may be part of the problem, although the Legacy saloon I had before was a similar din with 17" RE010s as well. I'll probably try the Goodyears as I've never had them on a car before, unless anyone shouts louder to tell me otherwise?
As for the exhaust - I'd love to but I think not. My boss would kill me. He's not a great car fanatic and his only comment when he first saw the (company) car was "its got a lot of holes in the front, hasn't it?". Now if there was a 'quick release' back box for the weekends...? Thanks again.

Andy,

It really doesn't take long to change a backbox. With practice you can get it down to about 10 minutes - a pit helps a lot mind!
