I recently had 4 of the Toyos fitted for £338.00 including valves, balance and VAT. This was from Peter Winn Tyres at Pocklington near York August time 2000.

Due to a tracking fault I've got a completly bald front nearside tyre (inside edge). My local supplier can do a pair of replacement T1S's (current on all 4 corners) for 216 inc vat and fitting, is this cheap or does anybody know a cheaper supplier ? I'm in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Another alternative is to put a different brand on the front, is this alright ?
If so which ones ?
I know the SO2's are excellent, and if I had the money (Xmas !!) I'd get a new set of 4.

Any help, greatly appreciated !!

You could try Falken ZE502's. Very good in the dry. But they not as good as the SO2's in the wet.

Had them on my old GSI for a while. When worn they were still good in the dry but nasty in the wet. Under steer city with new SO2's on the rear. Swapped them round and got lots over oversteer in the wet. SO2's gripped the WORN Falkens just slid out.

With NEW Falkens on the back it was not nearly as bad, but the SO2's still out gripped them.

Not tried all 4 Falken 502's on a Scoob though.

Long winded I know.

Hhhmmmm - I had Falken 451's fitted to 17" wheels and my initial impressions were very good (I swapped to winter tyres after a few thousand k's)...except for the road noise, which was terrible!

I have tried 4 Falkens on a Scoob (albeit 451s) but they were crap, without doubt the worst tyres I have ever experianced, especially in the wet. Wet grip was worse than I used to have from a Golf GTI on NCT2!

Darren, if you can't stretch to SO2s (which can be had for around £100 per tyre for 16"), stick to the Toyos IMO

I had Falkens on a Rover Mini Cooper, they didnt grip wet or dry, howled like a dog at the slightest provocation. Has anyone tried Yokohamas on a Scoob, they were a revalation on the Min (esp after the Falkens).

I had a full set of Fulda Extremo (£60 each) on my Legacy and thought they were excellent . Changed recently to Goodyear Eagle F1's (£80 each) and they are unbelievable . I think the F1's are the best value for money in their class of tyre .

Question

Should I really be mixing different types i.e. Toyo T1S's on the rear (lots of tread) and maybe a brand new pair of Goodyear F1's at the front ????

Anybody tried and had problems ?????

Cool

I wouldn't mix tyres at all, the best thing is to change them around until all 4 are worn out then buy a new set. I think most people would agree that different tyres front to back can cause handling problems. If you have different tyres then you could get more understeer/oversteer depending on which tyres are the better.
Just don't do it.

If you mix the gripping abillity of tyres you can greatly affect the handling of the car on corners.

like my Falken new and SO2 new combo above. The SO2's out gripped the rear. The car would then slide the tail in wet conditions with a fair bit of lock on corners and round-abouts.

I would stick to four of the same type.

My car slides in the wet on Toyo's
but I think thats partly to do with the thicker MRT roll bar and other handling goodies

Darren - you should not be paying over, say ~£90 a tyre - they are £85 all in down in Bristol - some sort of performance wheels place - cant remember name? (located around country)

I've heard both good and bad reports on the Toyo's. A frien d has the Falken 451's and has had Toyo's T1S as well. In their opinion Falkens were far better - an opinion I personally echo - as the handling on the Toyo's is crap - but then they are in the budget price range - No question about Bridestones being the best though

You could always sell the car and get a decent one?

Steve,

Mine slides on wet round-abouts aswell. Crap Michelin tyres IMO. Even if when not going too quickly. I have very litle confidence in the wet as a result.

Have just changed opinion about Toyos' - had the handling looked at - and it needs a thicker front roll bar - shouldf sort out the twitchiness it currently exhibits

So not so much the tyres fault

Darren - see you at Well Lane?

Unhappy

'Toyo's are great', 'Toyo's are crap', 'Falken 451's are great', 'Flaken 451's are crap', 'Bridgestones are great', 'Bridgestone themselves say SO2's shouldn't be use on Scooby's' etc etc!!!!????. Come on guys, surely someone knows the truth about all these tyres. Lot's of people must be talking rubbish because a tyre can't be great and crap at the same time (in the same conditions)! Why are there so many different opinions? If you're talking about 16" wheels, 17" wheels, wet conditiions, dry conditions, track use, motorway use, B roads use etc. then please say as we're getting nowhere. By the way, what should I buy as a great all round tyre for my 16" wheels? I think the only tyre I haven't heard slated for one reason or another are the Goodyear F1's. Can anyone confirm they're great (or crap) or tell me how much they cost?

How long is a piece of string....?

Its all down to personal opinion. The consensus though is that SO2s are the best, but the most expensive, and having experienced several tyres I would agree, but it depends what you want out of your tyres, ultimate wet grip, ultimate dry grip, all conditions allrounder, wear, noise, VFM....etc etc.

SO2s, T1-Ss, F1s, P-Zeros, Yoko AVS are all good performance (Z-rated) tyres, some have their edges, some have strong advantages over others, but you wont go *far* wrong on any of them. Tyre pressures will make as much of a difference to grip than the difference between the brands listed! Driver ability will make far more difference

On wear, on my S02s, if I run anything less than 36 psi on the front the shoulders/edges wear far quicker than the main body of the tyre! At 36psi, they wear evenly, and grip/handle fantastically

PS the answer to the string question, as I am sure you know, is always "twice the distance from the middle to the end"

Gary

Cripes - 36psi!

Does it need to be higher for 17's? - once tried it that high on 16's and the car was terrible - very, very skittish

on 16's I do 32/33 front and around 30 at the rears.

Red face

Sorry Gary, gotta agree with Steve on this on. I usually run 32/33 front and 30 rear, tried 36 on a few occasions and Steve's right, very skittish !!! IMHO

I'm onto my second set of FALKEN FK451's (205 50 ZR16) and at £300 fitted (inc VAT, balance etc) I reckon thats good value, thats from Micheldever tyres in Hampshire.

These are on 16" wheels and Ive driven all over the country, rain, snow, ice the lot, giving it large and never had any complaint.
Just my two pennies worth !!
