Choice of new tyres

All four of my Bridgestone Potenza Tyres are only just legal. After 13000 miles I am looking at replacing them
I have found the Bridgestone to be very good both in dry and wet conditions.
Are there any other good tyres out there that are better on the Impreza that the standard supplied Bridgestones?? If so what are they and how much are they??

From previous postings the Toyo T1-S and Bridgestone SO2 PP's give the best performance. I have not yet tried the Toyo, but a friends 16" SO2's definately provide more wet and dry grip than the OEM Bridgestones.

Hi
I not sure S02 is probably best tyre but never buy Yokohama A520. As new is super but after few kmiles you must be very carefully at rain. It loose special designed external gorooves and tyre is no more able wean away water. This dramatically change grip.

I've just put Toyo's T1-S on my MY 98 (16 inch rims).
When new they were only Ok in the dry. In the wet they were and are excellent.
Now that they've covered a few miles, I now think they're excellent in the dry too.
They're also cheap compared with standard RE10's.

I would recommend Eagle F1's, they are outstanding in the wet (when you need the most grip) and very good in the dry, I also belive they last longer than the bridgestone's. In Autocars tyre test several months ago they where just as good all round as the B.
I think they are cheaper too.

Just finished running in my second set of Toyo T1Ss. Awesomely good tyre for the Impreza, incredibly good value and Guaranteed too!
I have been told that Toyo and Goodyear are both part of the same company.

Autocar recently did a pretty comprehensive comparison test on tyres (some of the tests were done using a Scooby).
Ok, they didn't test the standard Scooby Bridgestones, but they did test the Potenza Pole Positions... they won!
The full report's on my web site at

Hi,
I've changed tyres at 13,000 too. Went for the Toyos. Too early to tell, but they seem OK. And at more than £200 quid less than the original fittings, that's the way to go (£400 fitted, inc invisible balancing and free re-balancing, if needed, after 500 miles).
Hope that helps.

Over here in the USA the Michelin Pilot Sport is considered to be the best (although very expensive) performing tire. However, I never hear of UK folk using these. They are very close to the S-02 in the wet and superior in the dry. Toyos? Ha! Not a chance. The Pilots are better in every way.

Hi Jude,
I looked into Michelin Pilots but there are so many models in the range and so little comparative info I gave up and got Goodyear Eagle F1s instead. Are Pilot Sports the top of the range? What about all the MXVs etc etc etc. Should I ignore all those? Any info greatly appreciated...
Best regards,

Hi Mark,
Thanks for that. Just had a look at the Michelin UK website (should've done that in the first place!)
The SX-MXX-3 still exists, and comes in similar sizes to the Sport, but is an old model that started production in 1995.
For the Pilot Sports, the 205/50ZR16 size is listed, as is 215/45ZR17.
Pete Croney had some SX-GTs that he rated very highly in the dry (diabolical in the wet, apparently). The Sports sound like they might be worth a go if they combine the same dry-road performance with decent wet grip, but if the usual Michelin prices are anything to go by, I'm not likely to take a flyer on them.
What month do Autocar do their tyre test - maybe they'll include it this time?
TIA

The MXX3s have now been discontinued and replaced with the Pilot Sports which are meant to be better in wet weather than the MXX3s (according to Michelin 12% better in wet weather cornering and much better in wet braking). As they replaced the MXX3 as the top of the range Michelin tyre I assume that they are better than the MXX3 on all other factors also. (although you never know...)

Does anybody feel that the Bridgestone SO2 don't feel as sturdy as the Bridgestone RE10??? When I has the SO2's fitted it always felt like there was some side roll from the backend when I went round corners. I even got this long after they were ran in.....
