This fits behind the OEM disks and I presume is to prevent stones, water, etc getting into the calipers.

Has anyone tried removing it? Surely without the guard you will get much better cooling of the disks.

I removed the guard when fitting my AP's. What have other people done?

We have fitted quite a few brake upgrades and have never removed the shield.Prodrive say you should leave the shield in place when fitting their upgrade also.Recently fitted AP 6pots to a P1 and decided to leave the shields in place. My own personal feeling is that they are there for a reason(to protect trackrod ends/balljoints from overheating/melting).Admittedly not heard of anyone having had this problem but thinking about it logically you are going to generate more heat with a big brake setup. So FHI must have put them there for a reason with the standard brakes.
If you have removed your shields or are going to always take out the ABS sensor if fitted cos I have seen them damaged on cars that have had this upgrade done.

Regards

Steve

I don't think you will come to any harm by removing the stone guard from your brakes. even if you have a big brake kit, the extra heat you can generate is dissapated thru the larger and more thermally efficient ally calipers, bells and discs.

Big brakes work better because for a given braking effect the heat is spread over a larger area, resulting in a lower local temprature

You will be OK, I cut the back plate away with tin snips apart from between the ball joint and the disc just to be on the safe side.

I have not heard of anyone having problems after removing it.

Mike.

Thanks everyone for the advise.

I'll leave the guards off for now but won't throw them away in case I notice any problems!
