Wheel bearing replacement?

Hi,
Had a 'clanking' noise from my offside front wheel area for a couple of weeks. It only happens when on almost full lock - in a car park say. If the window is shut or the stereo is no then obviously I can't hear it! All is fine in a straight line or with less lock.
The car was in for a service plus MOT yesterday and Mill Lane checked it out. There was nothing obvious so they suggested that it could well be the wheel bearing. Sounds plausible.
The first question: anyone agree/disagree? Any other ideas?
They quoted me £100 + VAT to replace it (about an hours labour) and said you really need Subaru tools etc. Now, I am reasonably competant witha spanner and large hammer so think that wheel bearing replacement is something I could well do myself. Especially as, if one has failed, it would make sense to replace both at the same time. The 'Subaru' tools sound like their own brand bearing puller etc. But then I don't have a manual....
Second question: anyone done this and, if so, was it fairly obvious what to do and straightforward?
Thanks for any advice.
Dave

Dave,
Other possible culprits to the 'clacking' noise could be:
1) Worn CV joints - usually a clonking/knocking type of noise on full-lock. I'd imagine they are quite expensive, but you should be able to source one from a scrappy.
2) Front Diff problems - more of a creaking/knocking sound (does this make any sense? ) that will increase in frequency the tighter the turning circle. This is probablably even more expensive to fix
IMHO I think the above two explainations are be more likely than a worn wheel bearing . If you have worn bearings they should be fairly evendent when driving straight or round a gentle radius (thus side loading the bearings). Also, it should increase in frequency and intensity the faster you drive - you are unlikely to hear it at low speeds unless the brg unit is completely shot...in which case it would make a real racket when motoring along!
Another final explaination is play in your suspension bushings - but this is more likely to happen at higher side g-forces, i.e. cornering hard. I'm not sure if you'd experience it at parking speeds.
I hope I'm not talking complete bllx - can anyone else help?
Cheers,
Andy
PS. I have my very own rear rattling/knocking noise which I think must be suspension strut or bushing related. But can only hear this at lower speeds on un-even surfaces.

Hmmmm. Picked up a mate on Saturday who is a very good mechanic and tool maker. The window was open and we had to do a low speed left hand corner. I hadn't told him anything about the noises from the car. The first thing he said was 'Is your CV joint gone then Dave..'..!
So, anyone know the scoop on removing/replacing one? Could I let a competant (lower proced!) garage do the work? i.e. is it fairly straightforward?
Cheers

Dave,
sorry to hear it was your CV joint I was crossing my fingers that it was simply a bearing
I think the trick would be to repost a 'HELP!!!' topic on the BBS to see if anyone has done this before,
Good luck
