Hi all,

Just had my 60k service and been told that both my tyres and brakes (MY00 4 pot) are worn out and need replacing

So, while I sit here in a state of large-garage-bill induced shock, I'm wondering where to go and what to buy. I've never had any cause for complaint about the brakes - I'm quite easy on them (usually!) and don't do track days, so OE spec is fine (although an upgrade never hurts!). I don't really want to have to fit them myself, it's a grubby job and I always hate it. Power Engineering is my nearest independent specialist and has quoted me about £350 for Black Diamond discs and EBC Redstuff pads. Does this sound reasonable? (Aren't the Redstuff pads a bit hard for road use?)

My tyres, on the other hand, I'll be quite happy to see the back of. They're Toyo Proxes T1-S, and they just don't seem to grip as well as my previous Bridgestone S-02PP's, nor are they as resistant to tramlining. I definitely want to try something else, and I'm particularly interested in getting a good wet grip level.

Any ideas which brakes and/or tyres I should go for please?

Ta
Andy.

Hi Andy,

I had Goodyear eagle F1S on and have just changed to yokahoma AVS sport their flagship tyre, i paid £297 all in fitted for 4 and they seem more than up to the job in the dry and the wet to me, they are supposed to be their flagship tyre in the wet. I have no complaints at all and about £100-150 less than general quotes on here for F1s

Thanks for the tip - I have AVS Sports on my Westfield and they're fine, but of course, that's a completely different car - half the weight and RWD.

How about the brakes? The PE combination of Redstuff pads and Black Diamond discs is at least easy and relatively inexpensive.

How easy is it to change pads & discs yourself? I've done it before on other cars (with nice, simple single pot calipers), but never on the Scooby. Are there any 'gotchas' to look out for? Is there much of a danger that there might be problems like the pistons not wanting to retract? I don't mind having a go over a weekend as long as I can be reasonably sure the car will be OK come Monday morning

Ta
Andy.

I have just fitted Pagid 8 grooves and Mintex1155s to the front of MY00 at 60,000 mile service. Also EBC rears with mintex 1144s.
I think it cost about £420 all in, but I fitted them myself.
They do make a BIIIIIIIIIIG difference.
Also fitted eibachs and had the prodrive geometry settings, yet another big difference. Dramatically improved the tramlining issues.
Hope this helps.
Julian

If you're happy with the OE setup then you should be able to get replacement discs and pads for less than £350. Black Diamond discs from around £125 and decent pads for around £75.

For fitting, I'd recommend AnG Services, just along the A40 at Park Royal. Ex main dealer, they supply mostly Subaru parts, but you can shop around for other parts and get these guys to fit. I can dig up their number if you need it.

Edited to add...I'm running F1s at the moment and find them pretty good.
