Just had service and was told back tyres are shot........
They have done 7,ooo miles in total, 5 on the front 2 on the back as per normal they have scrubbed out on the insides only.
Whats the legal requirement for tread ?
I wanted to get another 3 out of them, as there is lots of tread left in the centre and outside edge...... but i have been told that the inside edges are enough to make them illegal ????? damn !!!
If i have got to change i will go for 4 and have the 4 wheel alignment sorted out but not with main dealer as i see from these pages that the settings they use are not accurate enough to cure this inside scrub.
I will have a couple of tyres to sell for you boys on the track days then as the front are ok for a few thousand more.
Does not do anything for my health and temper seeing all that good rubber going to waste !!!
What do you guys think ??
Thanks

When they get this low the handling suffers badly though. If they are shot around the edges then thats when you have been leaning on them on cornering. The only other thing maybe the tracking/geometry is wrong or they are under inflated causing the outers to wear more. If they are that low I would swap them or get a second opinion.

just remember the only thing to connect you to the road is your tyres, doesnt matter how good your brakes are then, i don't mess put new ones on if in doubt, plus is 3 points a go if you end up on the wrong side of the law

Thumbs up

Thanks for the input...... just so annoying to think that just that edge of the tyre can cost so much !!
I will have to put 4 on the get the alignment sorted or i shall be having the same problem again.
COME ON SUBARU.... admit there is a problem and fine tune your alignment please !!!!!

Bridgestone's tramline pretty badly when they get to the end of their road-life so that's one way to tell. The other way is to look at the little bits in the tread (can't remember the technical name) - if the tread is worn down to about the same level (about 1.5mm), it's time to swap 'em out. Sound's like you might have an alignment problem if there's excessive wear going on on one side.

i had the same thing only got 13000 out of mine.
question if we all complained who would we complain to?
I never kerbed mine but they went off on the inside edges. i had the 4 wheel alignment done with my new tyres...its spot on and i am watching them very carefully.

Sarcasm mode off, now

Re Toyos -pretty good to be honest. Toyos (also the Goodyear Eagle F1s) have a distincly squirmy, rolly characteristic when compared to the Bridgestones. Maybe F1's have the slight edge performance wise but Toyo are pretty similar from comparing peoples comments. The decider for me was that you are much more likely to get Toyos at a cheap price when you need the next pair. Mixed opinions on wear but I am finding Toyos similar, if not slightly better, than the OEM Bridgestone Re010 tyres on my Scoob.

Heard good and bad about Toyo's. Good in the dry and ok in the wet. Only problem is, they wear poorly as do all jap tyres.

Still reckon Goodyear's are the best in the wet, and will last a few thousand miles more than the Toyo's.
As they last longer, are you really saving anything by buying the cheaper Toyo's ?

to add my bit....

...its 1.6mm across the centre 3/4 of the tyre, for the full circumference.

(as far as I remember, as I'm now off the streets)

Google's a marvellous thing:

http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/tyresafety/

"Tread depth

The legal minimum tread depth of the main grooves of car and similar tyres in the United Kingdom is 1.6mm. This applies across the central three quarters of the breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.

Most car type tyres have tread wear indicators, usually at least six small ribs across the bottom of the main tread grooves, and when the tread surface becomes level with these ribs the tyre is at the legal limit and must be replaced. Simple and cheap gauges are also available to give an acceptable guide to tread depth."

Excessive inner wear seems to be a problem with all asimmetrical tyres, I had it on Pzero's (scrap at 7,000 miles) , michelin Pilots (6k) and starting again with new bridgestone potenzas (~7/8k I think).
Maybe I need to stop being an @rse and pump my types up a bit though!
Going around roundabouts at 80 doesn't help either.

Seem to have started something here....... i have a few pics if someone will post them for me, i normaly use fotopic but that is not working well at the moment.

As you will see lots of tread accross the tyres just the inside edges again..... i must admit the one on the passenger side is a bit close to the mark but i had my fingers crossed to get a few more out of them yet. As was said earlier pointing out the safety aspect i am very carefull of tyres normaly, only get the best as its the only thing holding us to the road, but with so much good tread still left it's so frustrating!!

By the time i had spotted them wearing bad on the front and then swapped them front to back at 5,ooo miles the damage had been done and there was no way to pull them back in order...... i read up a lot on tyre pressure on here and at the moment i am running 29 all around seems to feel well balanced no noticable problems.
Don't forget i am running a Sport, so not biting in off the mark or really hard corner under boost.....
I will probably go for Toyos 4 for £392 from Scoobyworld delivered.

http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk/trolleyed/6/index.htm

A trip to Powerstation for the alighnment will also be needed, don't see the point in the main dealer doing this as they seem to work within their set tolerances, from reading earlier threads i don't see that these are accurate enough to cure this scrubbing out.
Excuse any bad spelling lol...... thank's for the input gents, did not imagine this thread would kick into life like this but then it's a problem so many of us face. and not a cheap one at that !!

Cheers
Simon

Question

I raised another interesting (IMHO) point here about the tread depth indicators.

Red face

Speedking yes mate this jumped out at me.......

"And the Michelin cards state that this applies to the centre 3/4 section of the tyre, so.........does this mean that my F1's are still 100% illegal as they are totally bald on outer edges due to cornering ???"

and the reply being..........

"Yep...as long as there are no cords showing. Some Yokohama's look bald on the edges when they wear but that is a tread design that cannot be failed on unless for the reason stated above.

steve (Authorised Examiner/MOT tester when at work !!)"

What a grey area... open to enthusiastic garages trying to you tyres.... maybe ????
Who said that !! ??
Simon
