Cracks in my discs - help
#2
Anyone else had this - I have standard 1999 turbo 22k miles.
Just changed the pads (for mintex) and noticed that the discs have got lots of small cracks in the surface going from center to outside , each one is about a centimeter.
I can't ever recall having overheated the brakes - or at least not with clouds smoke & bad smell etc...
Has anyone else found this and what do Subaru say about it?

The pads I just took out were Subaru (original) and that's when I found the crack so the problemis 100% Subaru. My 3yrs are up but is this not a manufacturing defect (and potentially a serious safety issue)?? Never seen discs do this before even with loads'a abuse.
I will try to get a photo and post it.

If you still have the old pads, put them back in and take the car to your dealer, but after three years I reckon you'll be lucky to get them replaced, it is a manufacturing fault, and a known one at that, just see how you get on!

Suface crazing is normal and can be worn out with gentle use, but when the cracks get longer and start to radiate from middle to edge trouble isn't far away.
Get yourself some decent discs (usually cheaper than Subaru) pads to suit and change the fluid. Then prepare for dramatically improved braking

My99 discs are made of chocolate,i had to change mine at 11'000mls,i put Black Diamond cross drilled discs, mintex 1155's and steel lines on and had no problems since(on my second set of pads). This only cost around £270,reasonably priced and is ideal for fast road use although if you fancy doing some track days then maybe something a bit meatier would be preferable.

Mark, Godspeed two-piece would be my first choice, or Pagid Grp N or Prodrive Grp N. Good fast road pads are DS2000 (Prodrive upgrade) or Mintex 1144 although DS2500 seem to be just as good on the road and take to the track well, too. I've got them all round. While you're at it, flush the system with AP Lockheed Ultra 5.1 and fit braided lines. That should sort it
