Warped discs or dealer bull?
#1
I've been having issues with the brakes on my P1 for the last few months, it's the Prodrive upgrade ( 330 mm )
They've been getting noisier and making a hell of a racket when braking from 70 or so - light braking from this speed creates ( what I believe ) is heat build up and the discs warping. This was the reason I changed the original setup ( after 18 months ) for the upgraded kit.
My local dealer ( not the dealer that sold me the kit ) looked at it yesterday and reported this:
"Worn front discs have hot spots where front pads have glazed & overheated causing 'poor feel'"
I did mention I wanted this fixed under warranty - sounds reasonable to me considering the upgrade was only put on in June last year. My local dealer was telling me yesterday that these 'hot spots' dont cause any problem with braking and are caused by moderate braking etc.
Now I'm confused - the standard brakes aren't up to heavy use, now it seems I'm being told it's my own fault for driving too cautiously on the uprated kit, which he did describe as a 'competition part'
He says they can skim the disc and clean up the pads but isn't this a temporary solution?
Now are they taking the mickey and if they are - should I ask that it be done under warranty or refer it back to the original Subaru garage in Norwich I got the kit from?
Thanks,
David.

P1 upgrade has a number of common problems with it including heavy disc wear, etc.
you mention the dealer talking about 'glazing' this may suggest the brakes have not been "bedded-in" properly, how many miles have you done and which pad compound did you get???????

I checked when they were put in and they are the DS2000 (?) not the more agressive variant that was fitted for a while.
I've done about 12000 miles since fitting.
I think it's unacceptable that this kit needs work doing ( dealer hinting at my expense ) to resolve. Do other performance kits need the same level of changes made? No.

ds2000 was (i'm fairly certain) the pad causing the problems..........ds2500 is now the recomended pad from prodrive for that application!
we are supplying our customer's with this kit with Pagid rs19 "yellow" which is much more disc friendly and lasts longer than the Ferodo options.......
feel free to email for any specific advice,

not in our experience, ds3000 was the upgraded option intended for press-on/track type users
post as i find............
ds2000 is a much more abrasive material than the revised ds2500

OK. Well I think it is unacceptable, whatever the kit was fitted with, that a £1400 brake upgrade needs maintenance after 7 months.
I take it my issue is really with the original garage that supplied it rather than my local garage ( i.e. warranty - as that applies to the car and not the kit )
Thanks,
Dave.
