Putting a set of mud flaps on my WRX at the weekend and noticed with the wheels off that the front tyres are both wearing heavily on the inside edges, yet look like new for the rest of the tyre.
The car (and the tyres) have only done 6500 miles or so and this seems a lot of wear for not a lot of miles - mainly motorway journeys.
Is this normal or should I be asking my dealer to check the tracking?

Isn't that something to do with Prodrive suspension settings if you do a lot of motorway miles? Hard(er) cornering would tend to "flatten" the tyre out on the road and give more even wear.

wear on inside generally means tracking is toeing out too much or you have a fairly large amount of negative camber. low preasure usually results in both shoulders wearing, high preasure results in centre wearing.
if you do find the tracking is out and get it reset remember to have it reset when you change tyres as the current wear can result in a "pull" effect on ball joints etc which means you end up with a different reading with new tyres on.
never seen it mentioned in any books or found anyone who can confirm it happens theoreticaly but from experience i know it happenes with our customers cars. mind you round here they tend to run the tyres till the cords show before worrying about tracking

The inside of the tyre wall always wears quicker on scoobs because of the way they are set up! But 6500miles is ****, got 9000 out of my last set and that's ****.
Moral of the story.....GET SOME DECENT TYRES!!!

Thanks for the replies - The've not completely worn yet and will probably get to the 9000 mile mark but the wear is way more than the rest of the tyre.
I'd think twice about a 'decent' tyre because surely that will weat unevenly as well meaning more expense! But then again more grip would be nice.
I've read about different geometry settings from a couple of companies on here designed to improve handling, anyone know if it would even out the tyre wear?

i had the same problem on my my95. Had the tracking and cambers checked.........and they were way out!! doh! Had everything set up properly now, replaced all the tyres, and cant see any signs of un-even wear,so would suggest you get the same done to yours. Oh,and it also made the handling much more responsive and predictable!! Bonus

just a thought as my01 suffered the same problem only noticed at 2nd service when there was significant wear .
my point is i never bashed a curb etc so the car so i conclude it cannot have been set up correctly at delivery. As so many of us have this fault, it seems very unlikely we are all bashing curbs , is there any means of getting Subaru or IM to take some responsibility .e.g free tracking checks at every service?

Thing is - few dealers have the equipment or skill to do full geometry setup. The gear they use at Powerstation is not cheap. I would happy to take my car to a specialist and know that it has been done properly.
My MY01 was suffering a similar problem with tyre wear on the original 18" Pzero's. I took my car down to Powerstation to have the Eibach's fitted and they also did a full geometry setup. Tracking was out - enough to cause the tyre wear problems. Since then, it has been fine. I've since done 20K+ miles with no uneven tyre wear.

hmm good point.
But then as it appears that geometry is not set correctly on delivery can we invoke the sale of goods act.ie is it reasonable to expect the wheels to be set up correctly on delivery.?
you could argue the car is not fit for purpose if the tyre wear is not even(subject to the normal rules of the road and no abuse).
just a thought.
perhaps i'll start a poll on scoobynet to see how many netters suffer.

I can only agree with the other comments about set-up, as MY00 has completed 75k miles now, with a reasonable amount of motorway driving and a few sets of tyres.
When tyres needed replacing the wear on the old tyres was even across the tread, which is what you would expect from general driving.
Suggest you approach your dealer and hope for a reasonable response (my experience has always been good). If they don’t have the right equipment, I would hope they should be able to arrange a check through the warrantee agreement using approved facilities.

Done 6.5k from new and both fronts are down to the canvas on the inside 1/4. Lucky my mate noticed or they may have let go on the motorway!!! Rang the dealer and told them I want 2 new tyres fitted, asked them to check the car just after I bought it as it tramlines terribly but they reckoned all was fine. Will make sure they do a full geometry check this time.

I too have just checked my tyres today on my MY01 Wrx which have done around 7500 miles and the inside edges are totally shot. The rest of the tyre is like new and i am not pleased at the prospect of having to replace the tyres at such a short interval.
I had the full geometery set up at a local specialist about a year ago but while the car was on the original p-zero tyres.
Would it really make such a difference having the geometery done before having the tyres replaced?
Does having the geometery done include setting up the tracking as well?
Any advice welcomed.
