Wheel bearing(s) -- where to get fixed?

I have a Scoob sitting outside my house with a suspected wheel bearing failure (pretty loud grinding noise when turning left or going straight, but not when going right). Can I get it fixed at a local garage, or would it be better to take to a Scooby dealer/specialist? Nearest Scoob dealer is about 25 miles away -- so I'd have to persuade the AA that they should take it, even though they delivered it to my house this evening (90 mile trip...) Or stump up for a recovery truck.

Now this might be a stab in the dark but I have had on more than one occasion grinding/screeching noises coming from my wheels and what it is theres a plate on the inner side of the brake disk ( it sits very close to it) and what can happen is stones can get in between this plate and the disk causing grating and loud screeching, all you have to do is jack car up remove wheel and get a screwdriver and prise the plate away slightly to allow the stone to drop out.
Might be nothing to do with what wrong but worth a try

Interestingly, I drove it around this morning and there's no noise
So I also thought "perhaps it's a stone in the caliper"
I think I'll book it into a Scoob dealer and have them check the bearings and make sure they're OK. Most people seem to start breaking them at around 50-60k; I've done 85k.

It would be unusual for the bearing to fail that quickly, it would rumble/drone for a while & give you some warning (getting louder when loaded as you describe). Suspect as mentioned above that there is/was some debris & something fouling the disk. Rip off the wheel & have a look !
Changing the bearings isn't cheap (labour was £200ish) & also had to have the geometry done after.

Well, I had the stereo on all the way to work so perhaps I wouldn't have heard it
I only heard it when pulling into the carpark (thought it was something in the dashboard), and then when I left in the evening (was louder then....)

Just try what I have said first better to check than a dealer to do just the same and then charge you the earth

For everyone's info it turned out to be one of the brake hoses rubbing on the inside of the wheel. Looks like the clip that holds it on for some reason had decided to stop doing so.
Fortunately I have the Goodridge steel hoses, otherwise (1) it wouldn't have made a noise and then (2) the wheel would have holed the hose, causing the fluid to p1ss out all over the place
