Guys

I need your advice. I got a set of 4 tyres put onto my 18" Gold Prodrive alloys recently. But in the process of putting the tyres onto the wheel, a few got scratched (quite badly). I was told that it would happen as the wheel is that big and the tyres were that thin.

So my question is this, I want to bring them back to what they were, would I powder coat them or get them painted? I've heard that powder coating ends up in a dull finish and painting it doesn't last.

Please help!!

Cheers, much appreciated

Are you mad?
A company put some tyres on your car and tell you the scratches were bound to happen. How do you think the tyres got on the rim in the first place? Magic?
Complain now, you've been had.

A tyre shop told me once I had to go to their other shop 20 miles away because they have a machine to fit bigger tyres, that theirs is only good for up to 17 inch wheels.

I suppose that your tyre shop had a machine that couldnt do the wheels or that the operator didnt put enough space between the wheel and the part of the machine that puts the tyre in; some sidewalls are harder than others, and some tyres are very difficult to fit.

However, if your wheel was damaged, I would also try and get them to pay for a repair.

As for your question, I had wheels painted in the past and never had a problem subsequently. I heard that powder coating sticks better and that it should be used for magnesium wheels. No idea if that's true or not, but, anyway, try and get them painted if they're alloy wheels.

Question for you: if you powder coat them, you need to take the tyre off and put it back on. Who would do that? And what would you do if they scratched the wheel again?

Brun, Stubee Doo and Claudius

Thanks for your advice, much appreciated. There was a few things I failed to mention. One was that he is a good friend of mine and second he didn't charge me for it.

I thought he did me a favour and how can I thank him for it by getting him to get them repainted? I was totally gutted when I saw the wheels but now that the damage is done, I'm just looking to get them sorted.

Powder coating them sounds good but I was told there is only a small selection of colour to choose from. Getting them painted is probably the best option but how long will it stay on for? How easy is it to get stone chipped? How much paint flex will it take before breaking off?

How did Subaru paint the wheels in the first place? That should give us a clue???? Any ideas?

Cheers

Wicked Wheels (do a search on google) will probably be able to fix the scratches for you - AND they come to your house AND they do it with the tyres still fitted

i was gonna get my evo wheels powder coated and this was gonna cost me £100 for all four wheels but you have to just take the wheels to them with no tyres and that includes sand blasting and the coating done job. they also offered me a 2 yr guarantee that the finish would not come off at all.and you can get most colours its not just white

Gordon- I'll be getting my wheels powder coated gold soon, show you them first an see what you think.

There is a powder coating specialist in auchenleck who has a wide
range of colours.....ask kenny blair as he used to be in the unit next to them.

Actually carrick engineering in green st done a set of wheels for me a while back and it was pretty good.

Remember my racing seneka's with the corrosion, well they poder coated it silver with metalic flakes through it.

nice finnish
