COOL CAR!!
If S03's cope with that power...(I have 117kw at wheels) then I am sure they will work fine on my MY01
thanks
I have just the Unichip and APS rear muffler.
Originally 90kw at wheels...now 117

I am about to replace my RE-011's on my WRX (My01) and was going to put a set of Bridgestone S0-3's on. From all research, they appear to be the best tyre to go for.
Does anyone have any experience with the S0-3 215/45/17 on a MY01 WRX? I'd love to know if they are good, excellent, poor, or otherwise.
& any suggestions of other brands as well would be appreciated.
I drive pretty hard.

ANYONE OUT THERE!!!!
Still awaiting reply..
Please Help me out!!!

How's it going.

The Toyo is a natural successor to the S02 - the S03 is ok but nowhere near the S02 in terms of performance, styling and value. Check the Toyo's and Goodyear F1 also.

Hope this helps.

To be honest I find the RE011 ok, but I don't push the car to its limits except on slower corners where I find the RE011 tends to understeer a little, but a lift of the loud pedal restores the line. Compared to P Zeros on 16" rims on my previous MY99 they are far superior, the pzeros were cr@p. Have you considered going to 18" rims ? Toyo Proxes and Goodyear Eagle F1 tend to get good reviews on here.

Wink

all TVR's were shipped with SO2's , so when the SO3's came out, they tried them........ they decided to go for Toyos instead, I hope that answers your question

don't go for the SO-3's, they are crap, in comparison to the SO-2's, i am getting new tyres this week and everybody is saying to go for the Goodyear Eagle F1 or the Toyo T1-S. From all reports the F1's last a bit longer, that's what i'm going for anyway.

PS:
forgot to say that i have SO-3's on my car at the moment, still about 4000 miles left on the tyre but i'm ditching them now

Toyos are progressive and easy to drive with a soft sidewall. They're a very good option fof wet driving conditions. P-Zero Asimmetrico is still the best dry conditions tyre, with the hardest sidwall. I'm now testing the PZero Nero which seems a little bit less sporty but better on the wet.

FWIW, I'm on Eagle F1's GS-D3.
They're comparatively quiet at high speed amongst the performance oriented lot. Also, they don't squeal when sliding.
Cheers.

Cool

Many thanks for your replys.
I am aware that SO2's are a better softer stickier tyre than the replacement S03's. I have been told that due to the poor mileage they returned that something had to be done. (thats what they tell me in oz) So the S03's will last longer than the S02 and there is the trade off..Not as grippy a tyre compound.
Anyway...
Who has actually had S03's on a My01 wrx? & then changed to something else?
I know you guys all say TOYO's but I'm told otherwise. I wont be taking them on the track .I just cant believe that the best tyre bridgestone has to offer is as bad as some of you say. Sure it may not be as good as the S02 but that is history now.
I cant seem to pull away from the race proven brands such as Bridgestone, Dunlop, or Gooodyear.
I think I'll just get the S03's.....
more replies please ..

Well, ignoring the OEM tyres, I have actually used the following:

17" S02 on MY00
18" Pirelli PZero Rosso on MY01 WRX
18" Toyo on MY01 WRX
18" S03 on MY01WRX
18" Toyo on MY02 STi7
17" S03 on MY02 STi7

Ignore the "S03 are crap" advice. You are quite right in what you say above. They are NOT as bad as some make out. The trouble is that one person on here says they are no good and then others jump on the bandwagon , and this has been going on here for over a year. Of course, what suits one person may not suit another.

We just put S03's on Carolyn's STi, voluntarily, but then I did a number of thousands of miles on them last year on my WRX. This included a streaming wet track day at Brands Hatch where they were superb.

I am running S03 in that size and they are superb, had PZeros b4, good in the dry but not so when wet. The S03s are a good all round package that will last.

Go for it you wont regret it.

Jason

P.S They take a 1000 miles to bed in, depending on how you drive of course !!!

From what I heard the S03s are good in 17" and 18". The jury still seems to be out on 16". I have a friend with a set on his MY00 turbo with 16" and he says they are ok so far compared with RE-010.

My MY01 came with Pzero's (18") - not impressed. They were shot in under 12000 miles and they tramlined terribly. Swapped to S03s and these are much better. They don't 'look' as good as Toyo's, but they are very effective. Much harder wearing (this set has done 14000 miles and still look in good shape) - dry grip has never been a problem and wet grip is good too. They are not as good as S02s - but as reported they do suffer from being very soft. Depends on what you want and how many miles you do, but I would be happy to use S03s again.

I am nearing the end of the life of my S0-3 215/45/17 on my 01 WRX.
They have been fantastic. Predictable handling and have given
me 35000 kms (22000 miles) of good service (mixed driving). The knock the living hell out of the RE010's in all departments (My RE010s lasted 20000 km - 12500 miles). I will surely fit them again in 3000/4000kms time when they are past the wear bars.

Evo magazine tested the top 8 tyre manufacturers under the whole gamut of conditions (wet & dry) with respect to braking, handling, lap times, wear rates and subjective performance and the Eagle F1 GS-D3 came out top, the Bridgestone SO-3s were well down the field overall and Evo were dissapointed with them when compared with the SO-2s. They did score well in some areas (particularly wet braking I think), so it is probably best to get the edition (a couple of months ago now) and look to see which tyre performed best under the conditions you think apply most to your driving style. I run with F1s and prefer them to the SO-2s I had before because they seemed better in the wet (especially through standing water) and they were a little more progressive under hard driving (my personal opinion of course).

I've used S03's on an MY01 WRX and they were excellent.

Also had them on while doing a track-day in very heavy rain and they performed brilliantly.

Never read too far into a car-mag report. They have serious advertisers that like to see their products perform well, if you get my drift.

Still haven't understood why they didn't test the PZero. The P7000 is not as good as them performance wise.

Tyre tests done by car magazines are one thing...
But what performs well on one car will not necessarily perform well on another car.
Thats why I asked the MY01 owners...
The tyres that work well on a MY00 may not be the right tyre for the MY01..(diff size for starters and diff suspension loads).
In Melbourne..all the tyre dealers I speak to dont have a lot of praise for the Toyo's.
And judging from what a lot of you write, the SO3 seems to be the tyre of choice for the MY01.
EXAMPLE: I tried the RE-711 (available in UK?) and it was sticky but I think the sidewalls were too soft or something coz it squirmed around too much. Brilliant tyre, but not for the MY01

Just a confirmer - drove home in heavy rain last night - my SO3s have about 3mm left on them and they were flawless. Stuck like glue. Threw the car around some tight corners and the only thing that slowed me down was my inability to see out of the windows due to the hard rain, the tyres had plenty more grip in em. What more do you want! Anyway, I'm sure there are better, but the SO3 are damn fine tyres (as mentioned - for a WRX)

01 WRX PPP with VF23, 1.1 bar (16 PSI). 30mm dropped suspension, sway bars, up-pipe, down pipe, full decat. 140kw and 245nm atw -
produced 103kw and 212nm when it was stock standard.

Well, I bit my tongue for a while, but here goes: I've driven the borrox off both S-03s and RE-01s (not to mention P-zero Rossos and Michelin POSs, er, Pilots Sports), admittedly on a B4, but it is still a scoob. Conditions range from rain, standing water, track, through to a handling course at the Motegi raceway (includes low myu surfaces etc - a bit like a mini MIRA).

The S-03 is the muts, performing well in all conditions, and add good NVH to the mix. The Potenza RE-01s are great for handling, but noisy (got'em on at the mo). The others are not even close in performance, esp. in the wet (and tbh the Toyos are not rated here in Japan).

As long as you get the pressures right in the Bridgestones they are fab performers (after you get through the top layer).

I can't think of a better tyre for the conditions in Melbourne than the S-03 (if the rozzers aren't out for some funding injections ).

All IMHO of course, blah blah blah

Don't get me started on the damn coppers.
They are everywhere.
Cant catch crims so they get the soft (easy) targets (motorists).
Speed cameras r everywhere. Except now they call them safety cameras. What a joke.
The state gov't has actually budgeted for the speed fine revenue and without it they would be stuffed.
We have them all over the freeways now and the tolerance has been lowered to 3kmh over the posted limit.

Damn Rozzers here are sooo corrupt it aint even funny.
They seem to catch the legally licensed motorist who
keep their number plates on with the correct numbers etc etc...
Illegit plates, fake plates, unlicensed people who disappear
after giving fake details etc etc get aweay free as birds. They're
planning a points system for South Africa next year - more k@k.
Luckily our tolerance is 10km/h and not 3... ouch !!
