Tyres

Hi Gang,
I'm a new recruit to the scooby world -
Just purchased a MY99 'V' plate UK turbo replacing my ageing MR2mk2 - what a contrast.
Was wondering what tyres you guys could recommend 225/16 std.
I have some crappy Kleber's on the front but some s03's on the back. Dry weather handling is preferred without being slimy in the wet.
I'll try and get to some of your meetings shortly to see what mods
can be performed.
Hope you guys are not like the MR2 drivers club.....
James.

Tyres are 205 50 16 as standard fit on a 99MY
I'd also advise getting in the habit of having all 4 tyres the same if you can. This is not a 'must' with permanent 4WD but I've had 11 AWD cars and can tell if you don't !
Do a search on here for all the threads on tyres, but the only rotters seem to be Avon ZZ's, allegedly.
All comes down to personal preference of grip and roadholding against noise, wear and price.

Welcome James.
Favourite Scooby tyre is the sublime Bridgestone S02pp, now discontinued but some people have found a new supply in the last week or two. Run a search.
Alternatively, both the Toyo T1-S and Goodyear Eagle F1 are right up there.
Echo comments above - four quality tyres will show what your car is capable of. Correct size is 205/50x16.
Cheers,
Richard.

thanks for the responses guys, it saves a lot of wasted time and expense.
My tyres are 225 all round on 16's, does the car handle better on 205's - it does seem to understeer quite a lot on roundabouts.
thanks.

Hi
The imprezas do understeer as standard, however if you have your admittedly crappy tyres on the front this will only add to the understeer.
As mentioned earlier I'd keep all 4 tyres the same, the S03's aren't a bad tyre by any stretch of the imagination so I'd replace the fronts with these, but be sure to match the tyre size with the rears, 225 is indeed not the OE size it should be 205/50/16. If budget allows then replace all 4 with any of the tyres mentioned in the posts above.

Just to add the Pirelli Pzero's are slimey in the wet.
Also if you do change just the fronts be aware that for the first few hundred miles they will be just as understeery as the ones you replaced - if not more until they have bedded in properly.

Hi Jamesn,
I'm a fan of the SO3, had them on my 99MY and they suited the way I drive very well. I found them good in damp/greasy/wet conditions and was prepared to forgo some dry weather performance as it generally rains up here in bonny Scotland. Also had Goodyear F1's and one of the Pirellis recommended to me, but liked sticking with what I know worked for me.
