Question

I have a standard STi IV.

I had to replace the front discs at 15,000 miles (before the original tyres ) because of a problem with rust.

Now, 22,000 miles later they look very thin with a distinct lip around the outer rim.

I have never (in 30+ years of driving) been hard on brakes, so is this normal?

It is in for a service soon, and no doubt I will be offered replacement discs. Should I consider an alternative (never really been impressed with them) and what should I look at?

Cheers

Cool

I'm comming to 39K soon and the lip on my discs is quite big, at the last service 4 months ago I was told they would probably need replacing at the 3 year mark.

No track days or much hard braking.

I usually change discs after 5000 miles of fast road use. I think average is 15k?

Trumble,
It was very easy, took me about 30 mins. Once the car is jacked and wheels off, remove pads, then undo 2 17mm bolts in the back off the caliper caliper will then move away, pull off disc and replace with new. The new pads discs have now done about 110 miles very good bite from cold and much quicker stopping. But I yesterday used them in some anger and was disappointed they faded out quite quickly, speeds were about 60- 120. I phoned TSL today and the guy there said the problem was that the pads were still not bedded in just need some more miles, I hope this is the case. Does anyone have any feed back regarding bedding in Ds2500 pads?

I've done about 10k miles now on my DS2500 pads & TSL discs.

Had a 100 miles x-country blast with Charlie Whiskey and John Felstead on Sunday. No fade at all and we took in delights like the Kirkstone Pass

They were spot on for a fab blast in Spain as well. Saw 140 on the straights but no worries stopping us for the corners

Just more miles needed I think.

XRS, I also have a standard STI V Type R which has now covered 35000 miles. It has so far had 4 sets of disks and 4 sets of pads and is now sat on my drive with the disks past their wear indicator and awaiting a 5th set.

The disk and pad combinations were 1. Std/Std, 2. Grp N disks as used by Roger Clarke MS with Mintex 1144's, and then 2 sets of TSL Grp N disks and DS2003 and DS2500 pads.

I wonder if anyone with good technical experience and knowledge could give a reason as to why the brakes wear out so quickly. Do cars such as 911's only get 7500 miles from a complete set of disks and pads ?

Thanks for the input guys. Had it serviced yesterday and they said they were fine, so I can put replacement off for a while. They also said they generally expect them to last around 20,000 miles. Interested to hear all the comments though.

Chris, I think your driving style must be A LOT more exciting than mine.

Trumble,
I am led to believe that the 2 17 mm bolts can be difficult to remove, mine were very easy. I used a ring spanner on them, held the spanner with one hand and tapped it with a piece of wood to shock lossen the bolt, incase it had seized. Not very technical I know but very effective and less risk of spanner slipping in my opinion.
Hope your is as easy as mine was to do.
Keith.
