The main reason is because there are more tyre fitments available in 215 40 17 and are cheaper. The 215 45 17 main tyres are P-Zero and Dunlop Sport, which aren't highly recommended on here.........

there's a small speed ratio difference if you fit the 45's. It knocks your speedo out about 1.5/2% I think.
More choice of tyres in the 40's, plus they can be much cheaper.
Scoobyworld are doing Toyo Proxes for £67.02 for 40's where the 45's are £83.40 each. Hope this helps you

So why do they put the 45's on in the 1st place? Is there any difference in ride moving to 40's?
Reason I'm interested is that it appears the new F1 can be got in 45's

Are you talking about MY00 and before cars? If so then:-
The P Zeros that came on P1s, Prodrive wheels etc. were size 205/45 (NOT 215/45). The nearest equivalent to 205/45 is 215/40. Tyres in 215/40 are available from a wider variety of manufacturers. 215/45 would give you an incorrect rolling radius.
