Hi , what’s the best method for removing baked on brake dust ,I’ve tried auto glym wheel cleaner, brake cleaner etc , nothing seems to shift it

Autoglym wheel cleaner is just acid cleaner; It will wreck diamond polished wheels if there is a chip in the lacquer. And regardless it will only remove metal dust. Also fetches the shine off shadow chrome wheels which then needs to be re-polished (our ex-bodyshop guy used it on my recently refurbished wheels when they were already clean...I was livid...why use wheel cleaner on clean wheels ).

The non-acid cleaner isn't that great either.

I prefer to use Magma or Liquid clay which can also be used on bodywork (handy as my tailgate get covered in metal/carbon deposits).

Needs to be agitated with a brush on wheels. If it dries, just re-wet with a mist of water or dip the brush in your car shampoo bucket.

Elbow grease (the stuff from poundland) not sure whats in it and I take no responsibility if you destroy your alloys. I used them on my white wheels. The Tarox pads and discs I have cause so much brake dust and will not shift easily. You will need to agitate it after you apply it, let it soak and then get the pressure washer on it.

Magma, liquid clay , bilthamber; They are all colour changing cleaners based on the same chemicals, those are probably the better smelling ones. Other brands are available that are maybe more or less effective or smelly (think iron-X was the worst smelling one).

Probably should mention try to avoid your brake discs (impossible I know), wash off the brakes throughly and drive the car immediately afterwards and use the brakes a few times to avoid pad imprinting. Especially important if you have recent brake discs that haven't work hardened yet; Have seen brake vibration and noises on new discs caused by the car being stood after valeters have gone overboard on the wheel cleaners.

it is harsh though, very effective but not to be used frequently
