Default Knocking sound whilst braking

Hi guys, new to scoobynet as I've only had my impreza 04 wrx sti a few days. As the title says there is a loud knocking/clunking noise when I brake. It's just a single knock but only happens at low speeds. Any help on what this could be would be much appreciated.

Thankyou for the quick reply, got to wait a few days until I'm home to see if I can sort it out. Such a horrible noise!

Cheap pads? Just sorted this on an Audi where cheap pads had slightly too much clearance on the carrier so would drop then would clonk when brake was applied as the pad got pulled upwards.

visual inspection should be enough to determine if the retainers are inverted, see the link i posted previously

Trying to post a picture on here but not sure how to. One of the retaining clips was gone so the pin was literally just hanging in there. Thanks for telling me mate
