My two Peneth....
My previous RE070's were fantastic in the dry. Wet handling was poor.
Currently running Toyo T1R's (one up from the T1-S) . Very good dry and wet handling, can be a bit 'slidey' on high pressures. Turn in very good. I get a lot more all round confidence with these.
Nankang. I believe these are re-badged budget Yoko's. Heard some mixed messages about them. End of the day, budget is budget. Even through they'll do the job, stick em on a car that's going to put them to some real performance tests and they're bound to come up short compared to a decent make with uprated sidewalls, pattern treads etc etc.... That said, Kumho came out well on some Autocar tests...
Try Motorsport wheels in Seacroft for a possible club discount and some keen pricing on certain makes.... I got all 4 T1R's fitted and balanced or about £300.... Ive used them 2 or 3 times now and they're a decent outfit.

I have Toyo Proxes TR-1s on mine, feels alot more stable than the Federals I had on before, no road noise either which is nice. The Federals I have on give a rediculous amount of road noise, so much so I thought that the diff was knackered! I can't wait to get the fronts replaced with the Toyos.
Nankang, well, to be honest I've only had them once and but that was on a 1.4 MG ZR so can't really say about performance, though like Alan, I've heard other stories, some say they're OK, others saying not to go near them, I suppose it depends on the car really.
I think the current list of really good tyre manufacturers that aren't silly money are:
Kumho
Toyo
Yokohama
These provide excellent grip but because of the soft compound don't last that long. From what I've read, Kumho have really improved over the last few years and have seen ratings better than the big brands, Continental, Michelin etc.

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

The older Vredestein Ultrac

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3

Toyo Proxes T1S

On a budget, I've never had a moments bother with Hankook or Fulda (really Goodyear....ssshhhh
).

I run the Vredestein Ultracs, previously ran Toyo T1s and first car had Nankangs on the back.
I span the first car on a roundabout, back end overtook the front, I think that tells you all you need to know about Nankangs
Toyo's were generally good but found them a bit nervous in the wet, particularly on turn in.
Vredesteins are the best I've had so far, tons of grip especially in the wet although I have noticed they are a little slippery in the damp.
I've heard that the new Vredestein the Sessanta is even better than the Ultrac, so that could be worth a look
Just to let you know Scott, if you go for the Vredesteins you'll have to get 215/45/17 as they don't do a 40 profile so you'll have a dead accurate speedo like mine
