Im a techy mate... Its a video card fault mate. You need to buy a replacement graphics card with a vga plug and just plug monitor into that instead. The type you want is a pcie graphics card. About a tenner on flee bay.

I wouldnt be going buying any parts just yet, open the case and have a look at the capacitors on the main board (they look like little batteries soldered onto the board) as per below. Dell are renowned for them leaking/doming and screwing the motherboards.

Yes I am concerned that I will find more faults but until I get the graphics card in I wont know. Hopefully its nothing more serious than a graphics card

Not really looking to upgrade the tower, its about 3 years old I could do with gettting it working as its got all my old college work on their and loads of pictures, i never got round to backing up

I'd be surprised if you've lost any data by the sounds of it.

U shud not lose any data. Yes it may have on oard graphics and this could be the fault so just buy a cheap graphics ard with a vga output, plug it in and it should come on. If u can get a friend or family members an pike teir grfx card and see if it sorts it.
