Agree with above, you can get a knackered high mileage import with no history and some dodgy home made mods for that price, you 'may' find a UK wagon with very high mileage for £3K, but more likely £4K.
For a UK 4 door Turbo absolute minimum for a good car is going to be £5K, and that will be an older high mileage one - for a decent nick car with average or low mileage, £6K is about the starting price, but you can get a very nice car for that money with a known history, careful owners etc...
Pretty much ALL the sub £5K Imprezas you see are going to be Japanese imports.

I have just bought a W Reg MY00 UK turbo saloon with 90k. No mods apart from Magnex back box - £5k.
Excellent condition, locally owned with lots of receipts.
Can be done for £5k, but I agree that there a lot of dogs out there.

I missed out on a 99/V Turbo 2000 47k with tracker for 5k.
Had car checked out by Subaru. It needed 1k worth of work done (driveshaft seals) - I negotiated down to £4500 but car was sold to the bosses mate while I waited for an answer...

I bought a 96 uk turbo (pre-face lift) for 4k, battered him down from 4250 tho'.
He'd been trying to get rid for ages. High mileage of 95k so I think I got a good deal. Good condition. Prob needs 500quids worth of work tho come the service at the end of feb.
Hold out, you'll find a good one in the end. I waited over 4 months for that one to come up, and I didn't have a car while I was waiting. Good things come to those who.....etc.

90K on a W reg is 50% higher than average ( ave is generally 10K per year, which means 2000 car should be on 60K maximum ), which would account for it being cheaper.
£5K for the V reg, but £6K once the work is done.
Apart from Andys car above ( which is pretty cheap, but is still getting on for £5K for a pre-facelift which isnt as desirable as the facelift models ) you should be seeing the pattern emerge.
But there are still people on here who will insist you can buy mint UK cars for £3000 for some reason, although actually finding one will be the problem.
