WANTED - My92 - 96 ECU, anything will do....
As long as it's working and from a Saloon
Would prefer a W6 or U8 as they are the worst of the bunch 'in standard form'. So should be nice and cheap
Other then that I don't care what it is (V7, 7D, 2C, Z4, 6K, 7K etc...etc...) , as it will be used as a spare to chip.........

OK SO NOW VERY INTERESTED
i have got a U8 in my car
what are the benefits of a 2C Z4 or 7D for example
didnt realise you could just change the ECU from car to car
if i got one and the numbers werent exactly the same i darent fit it ?????????

I'm no expert, but I have been investigating ECU change possibilities on my car for a while.
I had a W6, which is basically the same as your U8. According to most on here, they are very basic ECUs as they are from the 92-early 94 WRX cars with 240ps (about 236 bhp). They have boost targets of 11.47 psi.
I got hold of a Z4 ECU, which is from a late 94 - early 96 WRX with 260 ps (about 256 bhp). This is apparantly the best ECU with regard to running on uk fuel as it is very similar to the PPP ECU from the UK cars of the period. As well as a slight increase in power (mine got about 5 bhp), you are extremely unlikely to get detonation when using 98 RON fuel. The Z4 has a boost target of 12.71 psi I think.
After that, I had a hankering for a ScoobyECU which is a chip that goes into the spare socket location on most 92-96 cars. This maps the car for 97 RON fuel and increases the boost target to between 15.5 and 16.5 psi I think, depending on which one you get.
Most report gains of around 40 bhp with this chip. I got the increase in boost, but the jury is still out on my car as I got the torque increase, but no bhp increase I suspect something is amiss with the car somewhere (new plugs going on today).
You can fit STI ECUs to WRXs, but the mapping is rather aggressive I believe and because the WRXs engines are not as strong, I think the risk of detonation is high.
Hope this helps. Experts please feel free to jump on me if any of this is crap

we have got acces to an STI ver 3 ECU what do you mean by aggresive mapping we will be putting it in a track racing car so smooth driving around town is not an issue
ALSO what is detonation ( apart from it blowing up)
