Default Dare I ask??......

Right guys a good mate of mine is looking to but a Mitsi Evo 1V in the not too distant future....

Ive tried converting him to the Impreza but he's having none of it, since
he's wanted an evo for a good few years and will settle for nothing else!

So he's now on the hunt, theres a few about but they seem miles and miles away, does anyone know of any straight reasonable mileage ones about in wales?

He's not that worried if it has been tinkered with a little (as 90% of them i would imagaine have had a bit done) but obviously service history is a must and proof of mapping for mods (if any).

Is there any common problems that these have we should look out for, other than the obvious leak checking, knocking, suspension etc? somebody had mentioned ''Crank walk'' is there a way this can be checked?

Any info would be appreciated, ive been telling him what a helpful bunch you lot are!

Cheers
Rob

added; he's afta the GSR model with the leccy windows etc!!

iv had a few evoes evo 4 is probly the weakest of the lot,

rear diff knocking
anti yaw light make sure it lights up when you turn key and switches of when started,if you dont see light stay well clear or if light is on also stay well clear
engine tend to tap alot isnt a big problem but gets annoying
clutch make sure you put your foot to the floor in all gears.
rust around around windows
rust in boot well and under boot common
engine isnt as strong as the 5-6 evo
boost creep,if turbo back has been fitted it tends to over boost no good if its a strd car

there prob more but these are the imported things

Many thanks for that, definately some things to be weary of there.

I have tried my best to sway him to a 5/6 as well as a scoob, maybe reading this now from someone who knows them will make him see a bit of sense!
cheers again

Having previously owned 3 Evo's up to date, 1V, V1 and a V11, a good service history is a bonus, other than that I found
rust can be a big issue as mentioned above, check the condition of the floor (undersealed or not, UK car-road salt or a recent Jap import-no road salt in Japan), especially around the back legs/suspension area, inner wings, fuel filler neck, inside petrol flap area, arches, inside boot lid lip, inside bottom of door seams, also, mechanically make sure the gearbox engages all gears smoothly, can be a little notchy when cold but when warm the box should be a nice smooth change, bearings can wear over time and will need replacing eventually, especially if poor quality oil has been used for servicing. Listen for knocking top mounts when going over bumps or sleeping policemen, quite a common wear item on Evo's but not an overly expensive repair.

I had a IV for 3 years the best car I've ever had (So much better than the Subaru........Awiting flamage!!!!) Crank walk is an issue with the IV (don't know how to check this, though I believe a compression test may sort this out...dont quote me on that).

Also check that the AYC pump is working. Sometimes people will take the AYC light out of the dash when selling so beware. You can check the level of the fluid in the boot (on the right handside).

Try and get a fresh import, I waited 2 years before I found a decent one. You can look on the MLR, ask the question in the newbe section there will be plenty of advice. Most of the guys on there will probably tell you to spend a little extra and get a 5. Or better still, give Anthony a bell from Indigo, nice bunch of guys.

I haven't read any of the other posts so I might be repeating what people have already said
