Thats not a simple question, you'll get a thousand different answers on here. Subaru recommend 10/40 fully or semi synthetic for the standard engine, at the mo i use Mobile 1 15/50 which was recommended to me by David @ API Engines as my engine is modified. I'm thinking of changing to 10/50 myself as my car is an everyday car and as i start early in the morning 03:45am, it has lots of cold starts. Anything below a 10 rating isn't generally recommended as its supposed to be too thin for the subaru engine. I'm sure somebody else will be along with a more detailed analysis.

I've always used 15-50w (Either motul or Silkolene) in my classic, now on 115K and still running well.

A good quality 10/40 fully or semi synthetic in a standard engine should do the job, I'm using Millers at the mo its good quality reasonably priced and you get 5 LTS which is enough for an oil change with some left for top ups.

everyone will tell you different and if you search posts you will see that its down to personal opinion realy as we all use different grades and makes,
depending on what has been done to the car ect if lots of engine modz go for a thicker oil in summer and thinner one in winter for example i use mobile 1 fully sinthetic 15w 50 in summer as thins slower in warmer conditions and i use mobile 1 10w 40 fully sin for winter as its thiner so it gets around the engine quicker and gets to op temp quicker in cold weather

but thats my opinion im sure other people will give you their opinions on this too but just use a good oil eg mobile 1/ silkoline and dont go for 0 w somethings as they are no good
