Your best bet is to have a word with Simb2, He was in your position a 18months ago. STi 5 Type R

He went with the full monty, Forged 2.5, TD05-20G, Hybrid FMIC, Bigger injectors etc.

Awesome bit of kit but he did sell a kidney to pay for it.

My understanding was the two blocks cost nearly the same or in fact are the same price to buy. You get miles more torque from the 2.5 but it doesn't rev quite so high. Have another chat with David regarding options.

Bare in mind you had an issue with the gearbox when you first got the car and **** loads of torque might not be the best thing for it!!!!

I'll be going for a 2.5 STI short block when mine goes pop and a Uk 6 speeder

Take a look at these for 2.5's:

Check out the Stage 1 race engine (works out at about £1500 plus shipping from the US)
Subaru Built Motors / Race Engines

Or for a forged 2.5 already i the UK for £2500:
2.5L Closed Deck Forged Short Block Impreza 92-00 Flat4online.co.uk Subaru Impreza Mitsubishi Evolution EVO Walbro Fuel Pumps Injectors Intercoolers

If you find out about shipping costs on the Gruppe-s one let me know wht it works out as.

Since your on a budget I would simply suggest a standard 2.0 rebuild... no need to get to carried away as the costs will grow greatly.

short block sti motor going on ebay for 2500 ish last time I looked. A dream would be the full transplant of a Litchfields Cosworth at 425bhp. £11.5K though.

Im having an "built" 2.0 done at API at the mo, totally depends what kind of car your after. Like has been said 2.5 bags more torque but wont rev as high unless you chuck serious money at it.

What turbo you gonna run?

alright mate, the car i have is standard so what ever the turbo is on there.iv spoken to dave today and for a 2.5 is to much for me. so all i want is for the car running right and back on the road, things cost so much to have fun.

Like everyone has mentioned a 2.5L produces alot more torque and the power delivery is alot sooner than a 2L. But a bigger turbo is needed to flow enough air to allow for the extra 25% engine capacity. Standard 5 speed gearbox is only capable of running 320 Ib/ft of torque if used regular so the extra cost of a 6 speed or modified 5 speed is needed.
I ran my 2.5L on a 20g at 1.6 bar for three months until it destroyed my front diff on a standard 5 speed RA box, I've also experienced head movement due to standard subaru head bolts stretching. So ths extra cost of stronger head studs are required to avoid head gasket failure. As for maximum RPM, the 2.5l is around a 1000 rpm less than then the 2I. Sti cylinder heads are a advantage but to allow the 2.5l to rev properly valve train modifications are required and a big turbo such as a garrett to flow enough air at higher revs.
Owen developments have designed a Garrett turdo so no fabricaton work is needed to your down pipe, it's rated to 475 BHP + so if run at 1.5 bar boost this would allow enough air to rev to 7000 rpm. This is the turbo I'm going to use so I'll have a one year old 20g with 7000 miles for sale in the next few weeks so I'm open to offers
2.5l blocks are semi closed deck and due to the extra bore width the liners are slightly thinner so can be effected by flexing on higher powered engines running over 500 Bhp with forged internals.

The 2.5L block on - Flat4online.co.uk Subaru Impreza Mitsubishi Evolution EVO Walbro Fuel Pumps Injectors Intercoolers is stated as being a closed deck block, but the engine advertised in the picture is definatly a semi closed deck. Just something to keep in mind if purchasing from them.
