Default Engine rebuild update....

Well the car has gone to David Coe's Auto Engineering Centre in Gorseinon...

I've been taking the car there for the last 18mths for servicing etc... so i had no doubt who i wanted rebuilding it.... This guy is good !

The engine came out last week and i went up to have a chat with Dave towards the end of the week....

Well Congratulations to the dealership who rebuilt it for me last time. What a shower of S**t.
The whole engine had sealant going through it. There was sealant actually in with one of the Pistons. The same piston had wear and scratches on it from not sitting right... One of the shelf bearings had completely worn down...
One of the rod's looked more like a 3month old banana.... Mangled!

It was an absolute state......

Now the good news..... Dave has stripped everything down, suggested a few things and i've put a few idea's in and we sort of have a plan...

The engine has been bored out ready for the new pistons.

Race Pistons & Eagle race Rods we have already

I've got a shopping list now....

ARP Headstuds
FMIC - suggestions ???
Oil Cooler
Oil cooler block
Apexi Power Fc & Commander
Full engine bay hose kit, 8 piece radiator, 1 piece turbo inlet, 1 piece
silicone boost hose.
850cc injectors & fuel pump
New clutch -any suggestions ???

I would like to go for the Spec R stuff but i'd just be copying.... Anyone know of another maker ???

Dave's going to manufacture an Induction Kit for me once we have the FMIC fitted...
We are debating at the moment on whether to upgrade the turbo or not...

Does anyone have any suggestions on a possible turbo upgrade ???

If anyone has any suggestions on other things i could do or if you know of a decent supplier for any of the parts i require then please feel free to let me know...

Brake upgrades are also on the agenda.... whats good ?

I'm not sure if spec-r are still making the range now, I'm sure I heard they were specialising in other areas.... your going to have to check on that one Tony.

I'm pleased to see you are going through this in detail as you plan to re-build.
Do it once and do it right

What is you FMIC budget as there are several options to go for... you can get away with not cutting the front the car away if you want.

What bhp target have you got in mind ?

If you don't want to cut the bumper then it's going to be Blitz, HKS or lateral performance FMIC, (I've heard bad things about the pace ones, I'e not flowing enough air)

If you dont mind cutting the bumper, A hybrid one will be fine.

Clutch: Get the Exedy one from API, there is a group buy on these at the moment, if you haven't already got a lightened flywheel, get this aswell. makes so much differance.

Turbo, loads of options: Td05 20g seems popular at the moment or you could go Garrett but a bit more.

Brakes, Either the alcon prodrive set up or Ap 6 pots, the disc's are cheaper to replace on the Ap's.

Are you sure you want 850cc injector?? these seem a little on the large side!!

I've been told to go for 750cc smallest.....

Not really sure on my budget either.... I'm just buying things and then counting the cost at the end of it all

Ideally i'd like to buy a FMIC that requires no cutting of the car or bumper.... Has anyone used HKS ? or Apexi ?

Dont really have a figure in mind for the eventuall BHP... just see what it does...

Dave has planned for the car to go away to be set up on a rolling road....

Why put in injectors that big and not fit a turbo?? All that will happen is that the giant size injectors will be running low duty and then there's no point.

You'll end up with a problem like we had with Simb's car You cannot open the big injectors a small enough amount at low throttle duty and they end up opening and shutting and causing a surge sensation.

David APi

PS you need a minimum of a TD 05 20G on that.

Don't bother with anything other than a NEW one. The original TD05 is from imports of 1992 - 1995 vintage and the exhaust housing cracks and renders it scrap, They can be converted to 20G type but if the core unit is on its last legs then it'll end in tears.

New at £850.00 + VAT from me But no stock at the mo waiting it to come from USA.

05 / 20G is a solid 385 hp turbo with a few extra tweaks to the map on the rollers and we have a couple making 400 and a bit. Generally we have them in the 390 range out of the box. Make sure 05 and not 06 as the 06 wheel will be laggy on a 2.0.

David APi

PS 550 injectors are good for 420 hp which is enough to bust your gearbox.........

Bit of a stretch to blame them after 32 months. I am fairly sure if you did the mods will step in and block it.

Compensation ?? Not a chance.

Does anyone know where i can get HKS FMIC at a good price ???

I'm going for the 740cc injectors..... after advice by some of the lads off the P1WOC....

Whats the next turbo up from the TD05 20G ???

Has anybody run a Owen Subaru 475+ bhp Garrett Ball BearingTurbo

http://www.owendevelopments.co.uk/pr...asp?prodId=613

I'm trying to do something different with the car and not copy the regular trend.....

Water pipe has been sent to Alloy Polishing

Does anyone know where i can get the top of the engine powder coated red ???

You don't want to paint a Subaru block at any time. no matter how tatty it looks. The aluminium casing of the block is a heat sink and you do not want to keep the heat in........

I suspect that the turbo pictured on Owens site - in your case would be horribly laggy. The next up from TD05 / 20G is TD06/*** which is also likely to be laggy on a 2.0 in my opinion.

You can see so little of the Subaru flat four engine once it is in the car and built up with all the bits around it, I seriously question whether the effort will be worth it. If it makes you feel better then a wire brush wheel in a drill chuck will get it looking Okay. But one winter on the Uk roads and it'll need doing all over again.

Keep your eye on drivability Tony... when driving around town you want a responsive drive at lowish speeds, if you go to big with injectors and the turbo you may end up with a pig of a car at these speeds and it may only really wake up when you hit the speed limit... it's worth considering building a slightly smaller powered engine that has torque from a very low speed up it may be a much more enjoyable drive ?

I know that may be considered a hot talking point but if I was wearing your shoes it would be the angle I would take.

I bought my FMIC from flat4, brilliant piece of kit bit of a pain to fit but nothing too hard, defo worth it in the end. As for the Apexi power FC and commander, i would go through andyforrestperformance.co.uk £830 custom mapped with the FC commander, otherwise u could try picking one up in the for sale section. Hope this helps
Taylor.
