Where is my Petrol Going
Afternoon all
Just wanted to get a few ideas off you guys. Ever since ive had the Turbo ive had what i would call resonable fuel consumption with a tank of super unleaded lasting best part of 300 miles thats with the odd blast but mostly commuting at reasonable pace etc. Last month i drove the car to plymouth and back and was pleased to find i did the journey on one tank of fuel After this trip though my fuel consumption has taken a bit of a beating and im lucky to get 225 miles from the same tank of fuel.
any one have any ideas why fuel consumption may change like this, dont think my use of the right foot has changed, honest
Could there be any reason for this or is this actually how thirsty the scoob should be. i dont believe its overfuelling but when i was getting 300 miles could that of been a time of a problem and the trip to plymouth has cleared an injector or something.
The car needs to go to ace for a service in 1500 miles but i dont know if that would make a difference. could it need a remap?
anyway any ideas would be appreciated
Cheers
Ian

what model and mods are on it? I never get 300 miles from a tank though i spend a lot of time stuck in cardiff city centre. On a motorway run i can probably get 250 miles on a tank with a little to spare.
I doubt you will need a re-map as you haven't changed anything on the car though a sevice may well help.

Was going to have a word with John (Bigbrakes) about suitable power mods for the car before the remap i wanted so thats ok.
Cheers

If the lambda sensor is a three wire type connect a meter to the white wire and test for ampage. The lambda sensor will require time to heat up prior to working due to Subaru not using pre heated sensors. So leave your car on tick over for a few minutes to allow your manifold to heat up. Once at temperature a 1 to 2 amp rise should be achieved when rpm is raised by 3000 rpm. If no ampage is witnessed the lambda sensor is knackered. They cost 18 pounds to replace off E-bay and a lot more from a main stealer. When replacing disconnect plug and use a ring spanner(22mm) as they tend to weld them self to your manifold and anything else will round off the nut. If no joy with just a spanner heat the sensor up with a glow tourch prior to using spanner.

Andy should be able to tell.
But check the fault codes. Connect the two black connectors under the stearing wheel and watch the dash/Check engine light.
Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes and refit, drive the car noramly for couple of miles and then try the ECU check again, this should tell you if things are amiss.
Have a look here for details

Sounds odd, although I NEVER get near 300 miles per tank anymore (post-remap).
Have you changed fuel lately, eg. gone from Texaco to Esso, etc. Could be a possibility but I'm not sure it would cost you 50 miles per tank...

Just got the result of the ECU check from andy at ACE Motorsport, It turns out that at this time of year the classics can have a very common problem (common enough that he keeps plenty as spares ) of blowing the cooling temperature sensor which means they can run their cold start programming for a lot longer.
All other sensor check out including lambda but when he took it out for a test drive he can feel a hesitancy in acceleration and boost. He reckons ive fallen foul of the MAF Demons and will need a new one sooner rather than later. Must be fragile since i only have a HKS panel filter in there and not an induction kit.
will let you know later what the final analysis is
cheers

Cant Praise andy highly enough he has told me car will be sorted with replacement sensor ready for pick up this afternoon as he will put a rally car back and work late in the evening on that instead. Top Bloke
How often Do maf's go on these normally? Mine was supposedly new when i had the car 7 months ago. Luckily Andy reckons it will only cost £80 quid replacement rather than the £200 other models sometime needs Think will get it done when its serviced next month.

Nice to hear its all sorted
I'm going to check the sensor on mine as I'm averaging 15 mpg with mostly motorway driving at a steady 70-80 mph. So when I'm in work I'm filling the tank every 5 days and having a 160 mile return. What's everyone else with a classic finding there petrol consumption is and has anyone noticed a large difference in petrol consumption after they had there car remapped.

Recalculation 19mpg as per the 180 miles I drove today to and from Powerstaion. The tank holds a whopping 42 litres so Tesco have now taken 120 pounds off me in last 7 days. Is it possible to have a LPG conversion on a Subaru ?.

Brakes are looking nice and mahoosive! Verdict?
