Post Classic suspension - puzzled.

Changed my suspension at the weekend, swapped the standard dampers/Tein spring combination for 50mm insert STI dampers and Eibach Pro springs.

Now I expected it to sit a little higher, I didn't expect it to look like it did when I bought the car.

Before pic, standard dampers with Tein springs;

Current pic, with the STI dampers and Eibach springs;

Why does it look like it's sitting on stilts?

Because that's how it looks normally. Tein springs are renowned for lowering the car.

Mine with STI dampers and springs.

Mines got Eibach Pro spings, though, Jon. They should lower it somehow.

You're right, it should be 25-40mm lower than standard. The question is, what is standard? Mine was lowered 25mm with the STI springs.

Is the Eibach springs brand new?
Sometime it takes a little time for the springs so settle in.

Like CREWJ said, what is standard?
There really isn't a definable term because the car may be 30mm lower than what ever combo Eibach tested when the car was new.

If the springs is new then just give it a little time to settle in, it might just drop a little lower.

Don't forget your old set up may have been a little less than pert and dropped a little with age

I know when I replaced the front coil springs on my vRS it sits another 1.5cms higher which I attributed to the old springs being 10 years old and passed their best.

My WRX probably isn't far off that tbh

Your WRX is on it's knees at the rear, compared to mine Stu.

Although your point is very valid, the OEM dampers were 19 years old.

It's not just the ride height that's bugging me, it's how it feels when driving.

With the Tein's, if the road was smooth - well as smooth as you get - it would just go along nice and smoothly. It would be harsh over bumps and the like as expected.

With the new, to me, setup, the car seems to "bob" along. As if the suspension is doing the opposite to what it should.

Need to get the alignment checked and go from there though.

Your back is a bit high yes Standard suspension is a lot more bobby. I never really noticed until I drove a mates car with BC's which is firm and so smooth When I got back in mine it felt agricultural lol

I'll try and get the alignment checked tomorrow, I'll call in and see Alyn for a natter. He's handy to have on your doorstep.

If all else fails, I'll have the Tein springs refitted and see how it looks and feels.

That is probably more to do with the dampers than the springs.

A lot of OEM uprated dampers runs a very harsh bump valving in order to give better steering response.
But the down side is that the suspension will not react to small movement, and become 4 piece of wood unless you hit a bump hard enough to "move" the suspensions.

That is probably what you are feeling.
It is a draw back when OEM manufacturer are trying to make a "sport" suspensions without any adjustability...
It also boils down to the marketing to owners that "harder is sportier", so that is why a lot of sport suspensions are honestly too harsh for the UK bumpy roads.

Another reason why you find a lot coilovers with damping adjustment.
Properly design, you can have a soft setting that is comfortable, compliant, and responsive...
But allow a harder setting to really push that tyre into the ground to give that crisp turn in and sharper steering response for flat track use.

Well still no further forward.

Paid Alyn a visit this morning. Outside was a P1, fitted with standard suspension, and it was miles lower than mine.

Alyn suggested measuring the damper body to confirm that they are classic dampers, newage ones are longer. If I had been mistakenly sold newage dampers, then that may have been the reason it was sitting higher.

Since I still had my old ones, I could measure them, as well as the ones currently fitted.

Both old and new to me damper bodies are the same length, so I'm back at square one.

Hi Micky

If you are have fitted new age shocks then you will need swap rear top hats/mounts for GC8(or they're been swapped previous owner)

But New age shocks are different from GC8 just due they're revalved to different spec of the car,as New age(GD) is heavier than GC/GF

Have look on this thread

Eibach pro not a lowering spring - when compared to an sti?
http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk/catalog...roducts_id=256

Aren't tein s progressive springs front and rear? Where as eibach's are linear fronts and stiffer progressives, at the rear?

No idea.

Looks likely that I'll be refitting the Tein springs, and go from there.
